The Spongebob Musical is coming to Bluefield University

BLUEFIELD, Va. — The Bluefield Youth Theater is bringing Spongebob and the gang to life as part of its production of "The Spongebob Musical."

The musical will take place on April 25-27 at 7:30 p.m. and April 28th at 3 p.m. in the Harmon Chapel at Bluefield University. The musical features a cast of 50 kids and will run for a duration of two hours, according to Artistic Director for Bluefield Youth Theater and Bluefield University Theater Charles Reese.

For the past two months, the cast and production have worked hard doing the Nickelodeon animated series and musical justice for residents of the region. Reese is encouraging residents to watch the musical to experience the fun and unique production.

"It's for the children and everybody," Reese said. "There's lots of silly and fun stuff. Lots of great tech, amazing costumes and special effects. Giant beach balls and pirates and bubbles. It's a spectacle."

According to Reese, the kids are having a blast rehearsing for the show and have been learning a lot from the experience, including 10th grader Miles Munique, who is taking on the role of Spongebob.

"Finding out I was playing Spongebob was daunting at first, but I'm a decently experienced actor so after some time I realized I was gonna have a lot of fun on this show, even more on a regular show I've performed in because of the happy, bubbly nature of the show itself. It's just really fun," Munique said. "The time we've spent — we've learned so much — and generally this has gone much smoother than the other shows I've done."

Blaire Anderson, who is playing Sandy Cheeks, is excited to be in a main role for the show.

"It feels great (playing Sandy). I was scared because it is my first main role, but afterwards I was really pumped because this is the role I've been so excited for," Anderson said. "Rehearsal itself, it has been really fun this whole show and I think this play has been getting put together really well. It will be good in the end."

Daily rehearsals are continuing at the university before the start of the musical.
