Spinal Tap's Derek Smalls is mad as hell at “Barbie” on new song 'Must Crush Barbie'

Legendary bassist Derek Smalls — Spinal Tap's self-proclaimed "lukewarm water" — is back.

On his first song in five years, "Must Crush Barbie," the heavy metal rocker brings that familiar Spinal Tap, uh, directness to the season of Barbie. Don't look for subtext. As you'd expect from the guy who did "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight," it's all right there on the surface.

In a press release, Smalls describes "Must Crush Barbie" as an "excoriating attack on the pink sensation" and a "much-needed antidote to the ubiquitous pinkness that has spilled out of movie theaters this summer and onto the high streets with wall-to-wall media coverage."

And lucky for us, that Spinal Tap sound hasn't evolved much. Smalls growls "wasted film and ink" and "too much pink" repeatedly over a big guitar riff.

Harry Shearer (who plays Smalls), Christopher Guest, Rob Reiner, and Michael McKean promised that they were working on a follow-up to their beloved 1984 mockumentary, This Is Spinal Tap, in 2022. But Smalls (the character, not Shearer) has also been dabbling in crypto in his free time.

"Been spending the last year or so as Brand Ambassador for BruegelCoin, the Dutch cryptocurrency," Smalls said in the press release. "Since it was cratering this past spring, I was following the news more than usual, which is where I got bombarded by all the Barbie BS. I don't know which angered me more, but it's really hard to write a song about crypto."

We don't have many details yet on whether "Must Crush Barbie" is a tease for that alleged forthcoming film or a taste of a new album from Smalls — because yes, one already exists. In 2018, Smalls released the record Smalls Change (Meditations Upon Ageing), which featured appearances from performers like Taylor Hawkins, Steve Vai, Donald Fagen, David Crosby, Dweezil Zappa, Jane Lynch, Richard Thompson, Joe Satriani, and Paul Shaffer, who appeared in This Is Spinal Tap.
