Spectre music video: Sam Smith on Bond theme

How did Sam Smith wind up singing “The Writing’s On the Wall” for the forthcoming Spectre? By sending an email.

In the latest Spectre video blog, Smith, director Sam Mendes, and producer Barbara Broccoli discuss the latest Bond theme, which Broccoli says “will go down as being one of the greatest Bond songs in history.”

“I remember sending an email to my agents in America — probably the cockiest email in the world,” Smith said in the clip. “‘Is there any way I could do the Bond theme?’ The next thing I knew, I was asked to go to Pinewood Studios to meet with Barbara and Sam.”

According to Smith, the direction Mendes gave him during their initial meeting was what guided the making of “Writing’s On the Wall” to its completion.

“What we kept thinking about through the whole process was what you said to me in our first meeting. Which is we want to write the greatest love song,” Smith said.

“What’s great about a Bond song as good as yours, is that it can actually help storytelling as well,” Mendes added. “What’s lovely about getting a song early that you love, it starts talking back to the movie as well.”

Smith long denied his involvement with Spectre despite a steady stream of rumors over the last year. “This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honored to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song,” Smith said in a statement in September when his involvement was finally confirmed. “I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it.”
