Uniquely is a Bellingham Herald series that covers the moments, landmarks and personalities that define what makes living in Northwest Washington so special.

The 2008 blockbuster “Twilight” is set in Forks, WA. But on Saturday, April 27, it’s hopping across the Salish Sea for a Bellingham screening at the Pickford Film Center. The film’s director, Catherine Hardwicke, will be on hand to discuss her adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s vampire novel.

If you’re somehow unaware, the film, which stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, tells the story of a high schooler named Bella who moves to Forks and falls in love with a classmate that happens to be a vampire. It’s made over $400 million from ticket sales worldwide.

Hardwicke is the guest of honor at the Cascadia International Women’s Film Festival, which will be held in Bellingham the same weekend. As part of the festival, Hardwicke will speak at the Mount Baker Theatre that Friday, and her 2015 film “Miss You Already” will be shown at the Pickford on Saturday evening ahead of the “Twilight” screening.

The Texas-born filmmaker has directed 10 movies over her career, beginning with 2003’s “Thirteen” and 2005’s “Lords of Dogtown.” Her most recent film, “Mafia Mamma,” was released in April of 2023.
