In “As We Speak,” we follow Bronx rap artist Kemba as he investigates the increasing weaponization of rap lyrics within and outside of the US criminal justice system. Prosecutors and law enforcement have long used rap songs as evidence in many criminal cases. Over 700 criminal court cases, dating back to the ’90s, have utilized rap lyrics as evidence against defendants, a disproportionate number of whom are young black men, as the video reveals. If white musicians sang country or rock, it would be unimaginable.
