Space Jam: A New Legacy's action-packed first trailer has finally landed, and it looks like we're in for a wild ride.

Cartoon meets futuristic Matrix-like graphics (yes, there is a sneaky reference) as NBA champion and global icon LeBron James team up with Bugs Bunny for an epic new adventure.

When LeBron and his young son Dom (newcomer Cedric Joe) are trapped in a digital space by a rogue AI, LeBron must get them home by leading Bugs, Lola Bunny and the rest of the Looney Tunes gang to victory over the AI's digitised champions on the court.

Gone are the Monstars and in come a powered-up roster of professional basketball players as you've never seen them before. It's Tunes against Goons in the highest-stakes challenge of LeBron's life, which will redefine his bond with his son.

Space Jam: A New Legacy also stars Marvel's Don Cheadle as the evil computer algorithm AI G Rhythm and Star Trek: Discovery's Sonequa Martin-Green as LeBron's wife Kamiyah.

"It's one of the biggest games, if not the biggest game, I've ever played in," teased LeBron of the movie's big showdown. "The Goon Squad is probably the best team ever assembled in basketball history."

It was revealed last month that the sequel wouldn't feature controversial Looney Tunes character Pepé Le Pew, while there was also some backlash to the redesigned Lola Bunny in the new movie.

Space Jam: A New Legacy is released in cinemas on July 16. In the US, the movie will also be released on HBO Max on the same day.
