35 new restaurants and bars now open in metro Phoenix: Southern seafood to Thai cocktails

November was an exciting month for the restaurant scene in the Valley, which welcomed more than two dozen new additions including several taprooms and coffee shops. The long-awaited brick-and-mortar debut of a pop-up burger stand finally opened its doors in Phoenix. Just up the road, the owners of another beloved restaurant, Lom Wong, premiered an exciting new Thai restaurant and bar in the space that formerly housed Khla bar. And in Scottsdale, the sister cafe to chef Nobuo Fukuda's recently opened Hai Noon soft-opened for coffee and tea service.

Here's a look at 35 new restaurants that opened in metro Phoenix in November.

Bay Bay's Fish & Chicken

Bay Bay's Fish & Chicken is a new family-run Southern restaurant in Tempe. Bay Bay's offers two- or four-piece catfish dinners, party wings, banana pudding and "cheesecake tacos."

Bad Jimmy's

Bad Jimmy's, the popular food truck from James Piazza, is now a brick-and-mortar restaurant in downtown Phoenix. The short but sweet menu includes fan-favorite smashburgers, a unique veggie burger and a few sides. For dessert, try olive oil and sea salt soft serve.

Birdcall

Denver-based fried chicken restaurant Birdcall opened a third Valley location in Gilbert. They offer 10 chicken sandwiches, plus chicken tenders, salads and craft cocktails.

Broken Yolk Cafe

Broken Yolk Cafe, a San Diego-based brunch restaurant, opened its first Phoenix location on Nov. 6 at the Camelback Colonnade near the Biltmore area. Menu highlights include a chicken and waffle benedict, Californian omelet, Wild West burger and mimosa or bloody Mary flights.

Catalyst Crafted Ales

From the owner of recently closed Ad Astra Brewing in Prescott, a new brewery is now open in Tempe. Catalyst Crafted Ales has 27 taps and specializes in IPAs, stouts, and sours.

Chestnut

Chestnut, the decade-old Phoenix restaurant that closed in Arcadia earlier this year, has reopened in a new space at the Biltmore. Menu highlights include a morning bibimbap bowl, huevos avocado, lemon ricotta waffles and a Phoenix chopped salad. After 3 p.m., a bar menu becomes available featuring bacon popcorn, crispy brussels sprouts and loaded chicken nachos.

Chocolate Bash

Chocolate Bash, an international dessert shop specializing in crepes, waffles, pancakes and chocolate covered fruits is now open at the Arizona Center in downtown Phoenix.

Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf

Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, the Los Angeles-based chain known for its ice blended coffee drinks, opened a seventh Valley location in Phoenix near the Biltmore area.

Crispy Cones

Crispy Cones, a European-style ice cream shop that made its Arizona debut in Chandler earlier this year, opened a new location in downtown Tempe. Crispy Cones, or trdelníks, are Eastern European chimney cakes made from pastry dough that's cooked rotisserie-style and sprinkled with cinnamon or sugar.

Dave's Hot Chicken

Dave's Hot Chicken opened its second metro Phoenix location on Nov. 17 at the corner of Bell Road and 7th Street. The hot chicken restaurant gained popularity in California and even caught the interest of celebrities like Drake, who invested in the business.

The owners announced they plan to open more locations in metro Phoenix in the future, specifically in the West Valley.

DTC Sports Grille

DTC Sports Grille has soft opened in downtown Chandler in the space that formerly housed Matty G's Steakburgers & Lobsta Rolls. The space was freshly updated with new TVs and sound system. Menu highlights include cheesesteaks, Cajun shrimp mac and cheese and an Arizona smash burger topped with jalapeño aioli, bacon jam, cowboy candy, lettuce and tomato.

Dutch Bros

The newest location of Dutch Bros., a wildly popular, Oregon-based drive-thru coffee chain, opened on Friday, Nov. 3 in Fountain Hills. The drive-thru coffee shop is known in part for its lively drive thru environment and collectible stickers, as much as for its signature Rebel energy drinks and elaborate lattes.

Frutilandia and Taqueria Factory

The first ever hybrid Frutilandia and Taqueria Factory location is now open in Tempe at Arizona Mills mall. The restaurant sells tacos from Taqueria Factory and Latin-inspired frozen drinks and desserts from Frutilandia.

Gravity Coffee

Gravity Coffee held a grand opening celebration for its new Glendale location in November. The drive-thru coffee shop also sells smoothies, shakes and Gravity energy drinks.

Grounds on 2nd

Grounds on 2nd is a coffee shop, wine bar and urban market from the teams behind Mythic Goat Coffee and Rift Wine & Tap. They offer hand-roasted coffee, craft beer, wine, olives, cheeses, jams and grab-and-go lunch items.

Handel's Homemade Ice Cream

Handel's Homemade Ice Cream held a grand opening celebration on Nov. 17 for its newest location at Tempe Marketplace. The Tempe location offers over 40 ice cream flavors, plus sherbets and vegan sorbets.

Hidden Gem

Hidden Gem, the second half of chef Nobuo Fukuda and Sloane McFarland's project at Sonder the Mariposa which includes Japanese-Sonoran restaurant Hai Noon, is now offering coffee service on the weekends from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The restaurant is expected to eventually expand to serve brunch.

Hooked Boil House

Hooked Boil House is a brand-new seafood restaurant in Mesa. They offer fried platters, Cajun-style entrees and boils made with their signature Hooked! sauce, plus a handful of cocktails and brews.

Mr. Baan's Bar and Mookata

The owners of beloved Phoenix restaurant Lom Wong have opened Mr. Baan's Bar and Mookata in downtown Phoenix. Mookata translates to "pork on a grill" and is a Thai barbecue consisting of a rounded grill surrounded by broth with various marinated meats. The drinks menu includes "lots of highballs and whiskey sodas and cocktails that showcase the flavors of Thailand," co-owner Alex Martin told The Republic.

Noble Ground Coffee

Noble Ground Coffee opened its flagship cafe and first Phoenix location on Nov. 17. The coffee shop's profits support nonprofit organizations such as Goodwill of Northern and Central Arizona.

Off 87

Off 87 is a brand-new restaurant and bar in Chandler from Arizona Diamondbacks pitching coach Mike Butcher and his wife, Tami. Off 87 serves pub classics like burgers and beer. They host live music on weekends and play local sports games on the bar TVs.

One Handsome Bastard

One Handsome Bastard is a micro-distillery and grill in Old Town Scottsdale. The restaurant menu includes burgers, flatbreads and starters like pub pretzels and crispy bacon brussels. The distillery also produces Blue Clover Spirits and One Handsome Bastard Vodka.

Phantom Fox Beer Co.

Phantom Fox Beer Co. is a new brewery in downtown Mesa. Beers on tap include Walking Shadows with toasty notes of caramel, brown butter and biscuit with subtle dark fruit and a hint of black tea; or Negative Space, a robust American stout with cold brew coffee and chocolate notes and a dry finish.

Pizzicata

Pizzicata Mesa is the latest venture from chefs Viola and Federico Venturini, who moved to the U.S. from Italy five years ago. The restaurant specializes in Neapolitan style pizza and Roman pinsa, and also offers Italian pastas, panouzzi sandwiches and meatballs.

Pyro

Pyro is a new Japanese American bistro in Phoenix, serving skewers, sushi, noodles, caviar and meats cooked over a live fire. There is a cocktail social hour Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. when craft cocktails, wine by the glass and share plates are 25% off. The drinks menu includes Japanese-inspired cocktails and sake.

Rili-B's

Rili-B's 24-hour taco shop has opened a third Arizona location in Queen Creek. Rili-B's offers over two dozen burritos and tacos, plus birria ramen, carne asada fries and super nachos.

Robeks

Robeks Fresh Juices and Smoothies is now open at the northeast corner of McClintock and Warner Roads in Tempe. They offer toasts such as classic avocado, fig and prosciutto and strawberry and cream cheese, plus wellness shots, superfood smoothies, acai bowls and classic smoothies.

Roma 23

Roma 23 Wood Fired Pizza & Beer is now open in downtown Tolleson in the former Fuego Bar & Grill space. The pizzeria offers several unique pizza flavors like mac and cheese and spicy chorizo. There is also an extensive drinks menu including draft and bottled beers, cocktails, tequila, vodka, whiskey and wine.

Rudy's Country Store & Bar-B-Q

Rudy's Country Store & Bar-B-Q, a Texas-based chain offering 13 kinds of smoked meats including brisket, sausage links and pulled pork, has opened its fourth Valley location at Loop 101 and Raintree Drive. They also offer build-you-own breakfast tacos and Southern desserts.

Sala Thai

Family-owned Sala Thai opened its third location in Tempe. They offer stir fry noodles, curry dishes and Thai street foods like grilled pork skewers and salmon tempura with panang sauce.

Social Birdie

Social Birdie is a new breakfast and lunch restaurant located at the Las Colinas golf course in Queen Creek. Menu highlights include lobster benedict, avocado toast, lemon ricotta pancakes, grilled salmon and hanger steak.

Twist Hot Chicken

Twist Hot Chicken has opened a new location in Tempe, after making its debut in Peoria last year. The restaurant offers chicken sandwiches, including vegan chicken options, as well as tenders, wings and loaded plates.

Valley Taproom

The second location of Valley Taproom, which debuted in Gilbert nearly two years ago, is now open in Queen Creek. They offer 30 beers on tap plus small bar bites. They often invite food trucks to offer additional options.

White Castle

White Castle opened its second Arizona location in Tempe on Nov. 28. Superfans camped overnight to be first in line for the grand opening. Also in attendance was a Phoenix couple who got married at Arizona's other White Castle location earlier this year.

Yonutz

A TV-famous doughnut shop made its Arizona debut at Desert Ridge Marketplace in Phoenix. Yonutz was previously featured on Dessert Wars and Shark Tank. The fantastical dessert shop specializes in smashed doughnuts filled with ice cream.
