'South Park' wants Americans to start caring about school shootings again

For the Season 22 premiere episode, South Park used comedy to tackle the topic of school shootings. The episode focused on how shootings have become so commonplace in society, that Americans have grown apathetic to them.

The show opened with children working in a classroom as a shooting occurs. However, neither the students nor the teacher react to the shooting, and go about business as normal. In fact, throughout the entire episode, only one character, Sharon, shows concern over the school shootings.

At one point Sharon yells at a group of parents, “I want you to be angry! Every day, we hear about another school shooting! It used to be a big deal! I want it to be a big deal again.”

South Park has been known to ruffle the feather of various groups, thanks to its satirical approach to current social and political issues. Prior to the launch of the new season, the show created and championed the hashtag #cancelsouthpark. And now that the first episode has aired, it is clear it was jokingly referring to other people and organizations that have been boycotted as a result of their stance on social issues.

Regardless of how one might feel about a cartoon tackling such a hot-button topic, the show is hoping to continue or increase dialogue about school shootings in America.

South Park airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on Comedy Central.
