South Korean guitarist Jiji to perform in Placitas

Oct. 21—The South Korean guitarist Jiji will perform as part of the Placitas Artist Series at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at the Las Placitas Presbyterian Church.

Jiji began playing classical guitar when she was 9 years old. She was accepted into the Korea National University of Arts when she was 14, before eventually moving to the United States at the age of 15 when she was accepted into the Cleveland Institute of Music.

With a repertoire of both classical and contemporary classical music, as well as free improvisation, Jiji has presented solo recitals at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the National Art Gallery, and her performances have been featured on notable platforms such as PBS and NPR.

The guitarist has premiered compositions by a diverse range of artists and performed alongside renowned ensembles, including the New York Philharmonic and Cuarteto Latinoamericano.

An advocate of new music, Jiji has premiered a duo piece, "Talking Guitars" by renowned composer, Paul Lansky.

This year, she will release "UNBOUND," the culmination of a multiyear commissioning and recording project.

She has appeared with numerous orchestras, including the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, New York Youth Symphony and Kansas City Symphony.
