South Georgia Ballet to present 'The Nutcracker'

Nov. 15—THOMASVILLE — In the first weekend of December, South Georgia Ballet will present its annual performance of "The Nutcracker" at Thomasville Municipal Auditorium. This year's production, presented by Thomasville National Bank, will feature a live orchestra and guest artists from Cincinnati Ballet for the annual holiday classic.

This year's performance will depart from the traditional date of Thanksgiving weekend; it will be held Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 2-3.

The audience will be delighted as the grand curtain reveals a German Christmas market where the party guests stroll through on their way to the Stahlbaums' Christmas party and are introduced to the incomparable Godfather Drosselmeyer, performed by Jeff Lovett, as the mysterious toy maker. This wintery wonderland is reminiscent of the famous Christmas markets in Munich. The set was designed and built by parent volunteer Chris Holt.

Artistic director Melissa June stated, "I am constantly blown away at the talent of not only our dancers and choreographers, but the parent volunteers as well. We are so lucky to have parents that are so dedicated to the dancers. We wouldn't have such a professional production without them."

As Clara and her handsome Prince, played by Amy Holt and Dylan O'Neal, battle their way past terrifying mice and frolic through the icy snow forest, they find themselves in his Kingdom of the Sweets where he presents Clara with gifts from all around the world including exotic coffee, fine chocolate, lively peppermint, energetic tea, delicate marzipan and adorable candied bon bons. Dancers from Moultrie, Adi Grace Evans and Gabriella Gallagher, will be featured in the cast this year.

Thanks to the generosity of the Edward C. Fogg, III and Lisbeth A. Fogg Charitable Trust, South Georgia Ballet is able to present a professional orchestra, under the direction of Boyan Bonev.

"We are so grateful for the Fogg Trust for providing the funding to have an orchestra," June said. "It really enhances the ballet for everyone! The instruments provide a richer sound and gives the audience a multifaceted experience as well as giving the dancers an opportunity to learn how to adjust their steps to live music."

The orchestra was also commissioned to play during the Monday Matinee performance for local pre-school children, Title I schools, differently abled students, and local nursing home residents. With over 1,100 people in attendance on Monday, most of them had never experienced hearing a live orchestra while watching the ballet.

South Georgia Ballet patrons will be treated to amazing guest artists from Cincinnati. Chandler Proctor and Minori Sakita will wow the crowd with their gorgeous lines, exquisite technique and breathtaking performance quality.

"Our dancers are always in awe at the beauty and skill of our guest artists, but more importantly, they are inspired by how nice and down to Earth they are," June said. "Chandler was our Cavalier last year and we are excited to have him return with his partner Minori!"
