The Sound of Music: Test your knowledge with a lyric quiz

How well do you know the lyrics to the songs of ‘The Sound of Music'?

On March 2, 1965, Robert Wise’s film adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music — starring a brilliant, joyous Julie Andrews — first premiered in the U.S.

Based on the story of Maria von Trapp, a governess who taught a strict naval captain’s seven children how to sing and won their father’s heart in the process, the musical picked up 10 Academy Award nominations, including nods for Best Actress for Andrews, and won five, including Best Picture.

The film’s power and popularity hasn’t waned a bit over the last half-century; in 2013, NBC aired The Sound of Music Live, which kicked off the recent trend of live telecast musicals (though the TV event was widely hate-watched, in large part due to fans’ loyalty to Wise’s film). For the movie’s 50th anniversary in 2015, Lady Gaga performed a tribute at last year’s Oscar ceremony, of which Andrews herself expressed sincere appreciation.

Now, 51 years after its premiere and a round 50 since it took home the Academy’s top honor in 1966, we’re here to test your knowledge of the beloved musical’s lyrics. Brush up on your favorite things, your so long-farewells, and how to solve a problem like Maria, below!
