‘Sound of Freedom’ Scores Big on VOD — Even Though It Was Already Streaming

Five recent releases debuted on different VOD charts this past week, and for the second week in a row, three different films took #1 among the three we follow. Two of these took #1 slots, with “Sound of Freedom” (Angel) atop Vudu and #2 at iTunes, while “PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie” (Paramount) reversing those positions at those two sites.

Google Play, which often lags behind the others seems particularly slow this week, with “The Equalizer 3” (Sony) still #1 even though it doesn’t make the top five at the other two. And “PAW Patrol” ranks only fourth, with “Sound of Freedom” seventh.

Netflix is back in Sony streamer mode, with “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” #1 and “Insidious: The Red Door” #2 (both new this week). But two recent festival-premiered originals took the two new spots. “Sly” (Stallone of course), a documentary, and “Nyad,” about the pioneering swimmer Diane Nyad with Annette Bening, are third and fourth respectively there.

“Sound of Freedom” is curious, since not only did it have a delayed release — a full four months, and of this year’s releases so far only “Oppenheimer” will have a similar gap after theatrical release — but the film first streamed on Angel’s in-house channel on October 13 (for the $19.99 a month all content charge, it came free). This new step is for downloading, not just viewing the film.

“PAW Patrol” is a $19.99 rental, though the to-own option is also available at $19.99. It had only a 32-day window, shorter than average for Paramount releases.

Also new this week are “A Haunting in Venice” (Disney), which briefly was #1 on Halloween at iTunes. It is currently #6 there, but #3 on Vudu (which ranks by revenue, not transactions; the site’s top nine are all higher priced releases. Again, Google Play lags, with “A Haunting in Venice” not even yet in their top 10. “The Blind” (Fathom) is #9 at Vudu at $19.99, with “The Kill Room” (Shout) after a limited theatrical release #9 at iTunes. The Samuel L. Jackson/Uma Thurman action title is priced at $9.99

Its fourth week out sees “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning: Part One” (Paramount) third at iTunes and Google Play. Rounding out titles on all three charts are “Barbie” (Warner Bros.) and “Gran Turismo” (Sony), the latter with its price reduced to $5.99.

“Sly” and “Nyad” have to compete with two top Sony releases, so it’s unclear whether they are getting fewer initial viewings than originals like “Fair Play” or last week’s “Pain Hustlers,” both of which opened at #1 though quickly disappeared from the top 10 (“Pain” a week after is already gone). David Fincher’s “The Killer” is added this Friday. It might be a challenge for it to top “Spider-Verse.”

The third new original is “Locked In,” produced by the French studio Gaumont in English. It stars Famke Janssen as a nurse who tries to figure out a comatose patient’s secrets, and is currently #5 at Netflix.
