Sosie Bacon wasn’t always sure she'd follow in the footsteps of her celebrity parents, Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick. With roles in Mare of Easttown and Smile (2022), she’s made a name for herself as an actress — and her parents couldn’t be prouder of her achievements.

The actress was born Sosie Ruth Bacon in Los Angeles on March 15, 1992 — nearly four years after her parents wed and three years following the birth of her brother, Travis Bacon.

Kevin and Kyra raised their kids outside of the public eye, and while they didn’t encourage Sosie to pursue a career in Hollywood, they didn’t keep her away from it. She was just as happy to try acting as she was to return to school and her friends.

When she decided to pursue an acting career, it was on her terms. Asked if her parents had any acting advice for her, Sosie told Harper’s Bazaar, “I think it's more a general encouragement to trust my own instincts, more than anything.”

Sosie’s acting career meant moving to L.A. while her parents remained on the East Coast, but they’ve stayed close despite the distance. When they’re not together, she’s posting tributes to her parents and sharing childhood memories on Instagram.

From on-screen collaborations to Instagram singalongs, here’s everything to know about Sosie Bacon’s relationship with her parents, Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick.

Kevin and Kyra formally met and fell in love in 1987 while working together on the PBS film Lemon Sky (1988). Kevin told PEOPLE it was love at first sight when he saw Kyra on set. "I was knocked out,” he recalled. “I thought she was amazing."

She eventually agreed to a dinner date where they talked and laughed for hours, and the next day, Kyra knew he was the one.  "I remember waking up and going, 'I feel like home,’ ” she said. “I realized, 'Oh, that was him.' "

Before Lemon Sky, Kyra first met Kevin years prior at a deli in 1978 while he was in the off-Broadway play Getting Out — a story they shared with PEOPLE while celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary in September 2023.

Kevin and Kyra got engaged in December 1987 and married on Sept. 4, 1988. They welcomed their son, Travis, in June 1989 and their daughter, Sosie, in March 1992.

Kevin and Kyra didn’t push Sosie toward Hollywood

Sosie’s parents raised her and Travis away from Hollywood life and took parenthood very seriously.

During a 2021 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Kyra said: “My motherhood really defines me. I've been an actor forever and I have my own career, my own life and I always have, but Mom is my title. It's the thing I think about in the morning, it's the thing I think about when I go to sleep."

In a 2013 interview with Vulture, Kevin described his parenting style. "When I go home, I try to raise my children with honesty and integrity and teach them to take care of the world and of each other," he said.

Sosie was named Miss Golden Globe (now called Golden Globe Ambassador) in 2014, and her parents were by her side. “She just handled it great. It was like she’d been doing it her whole life. It blew our minds,” Kevin told PEOPLE after the awards show. “Up until the time [Sosie and Travis] were about 15, I don’t think you could even find a photograph of them unless it was snapped on a beach somewhere. We just didn’t take them to events and we just kind of kept that part of our lives separate.”

Sosie worked with her parents twice while growing up

Sosie grew up mostly away from show business, but there were some exceptions. At 12, she appeared onscreen with both of her parents in the 2005 film Loverboy, which Kevin also directed. Sosie played a 10-year-old version of her mother’s character. "I just couldn't resist it," Kevin told New York magazine, noting that he cast his daughter in the role because he believed she was perfect for it. “Sosie was cool. She kind of got it out of her system. She said, 'Oh, that was fun — now I'm going back to school.' "

At 17, Sosie had a guest role on Kyra’s series The Closer, appearing alongside her Emmy-winning mom during season 5 as Charlie, the niece of Kyra’s character Brenda Leigh Johnson.

It would be several years before she worked with her family again: The actress appeared in the 2017 film Story of a Girl, Kyra’s directorial debut. The TV movie also starred Kevin, and Travis provided its music. "It's great working with your family, and it's complicated working with your family,” Kyra told PEOPLE in 2023. “But you know no one's going anywhere, so that's kind of nice. You can struggle through it and puzzle through it together."

Her parents support her acting career

It wasn’t until Sosie was an adult that she chose an acting career. Although her parents knew it wouldn’t be easy, they supported her.

When Smile was released in 2022, Kevin reflected on that time in his daughter’s career. "When she finally, in her early 20s, decided that this is what she wanted to do, she dropped out of college and moved to L.A. and really started doing all the right stuff. Pounding the pavement, doing self-tape after self-tape and studying," he told PEOPLE.

Kyra was supportive but concerned. During a September 2017 interview with Good Housekeeping, she said: “As an actor, there is so much rejection. Kevin and I have had some painful experiences, and you don’t want your kid to go through that. But I want [Sosie] to follow her passion, and acting has become her passion.”

Sosie never felt pressure from her parents in either direction, though. “They tried to just stay out of it. I don't think that they encouraged or discouraged either way. Having parents that are in this, you see a lot of the negative sides of it, not just the flashy, fun side of it,” she told Harper’s Bazaar in 2022. “But that being said, as soon as I made the choice, it was like, ‘Amazing. That's exciting. Now we can talk about it.’ ”

She often sings and dances with her parents

The Bacon family’s social media feeds are filled with clips of them singing and dancing. Kevin formed the Bacon Brothers in 1994 with his brother, Michael Bacon, and both of Kevin’s children inherited a love of music. While Travis focuses more on his industrial metal band, CONTRACULT Collective, Sosie often joins her parents for singalongs and dance numbers.

On Halloween in 2022, Sosie shared an Instagram video of herself and her mom singing Alanis Morissette’s “Hand in My Pocket.” Earlier that month, she joined her dad for a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love.”

Sosie talked about her family’s passion for music on The Kelly Clarkson Show and mentioned that her brother is a “musician musician” who doesn’t prefer to do singalongs with his family.

Travis eventually made an appearance in a Bacon family video playing acoustic guitar in a rendition of Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb” alongside Sosie, his parents, his partner Angelina Sambrotto and Sosie’s boyfriend, actor Scoot McNairy.

They share a love for horror movies

In addition to acting, horror is a family tradition. Speaking to Kelly Clarkson in 2022, Sosie said, “I love horror. We’re a big horror family ever since I was a kid.”

With her starring role in Smile, she joined her family’s horror movie legacy. Kevin has several horror credits on his résumé, including Friday the 13th (1980) and Flatliners (1990), while Kyra starred in The Possession (2012). In 2022, Travis launched Slashtag Cinema, a series of horror shorts released on Instagram and TikTok that he produced, wrote and starred in with his friends.

Despite her parents’ experience in the horror genre, they were still shocked by Sosie’s performance in Smile. “When I saw the movie I was just really taken aback with, not only with how great she was but also how hard that role was, because it’s one of those parts where there is no break,” Kevin told The Hollywood Reporter in 2022. “I was very proud of her.”

Both Sosie and her brother have moved out of their family home, but Kevin and Kyra always welcome them back with open arms.

Becoming an empty nester was a challenge for Kyra. "If you do your job well, your children leave you," she told Good Morning America in 2021. “So it's weird and it's hard. But I'm grateful to have adult children now, but I think initially it's like, 'Wait, what are you talking about? I birthed you and I took care of you your whole life and now you're leaving me!' It felt wrong."

Sosie lives in L.A. but when work brings her to the New York area, her parents are there for her.

She moved back in with Kevin and Kyra, who live in Connecticut, while filming Smile — although her demanding schedule meant they didn’t spend much time together. “I was so busy that I could never see them,” Sosie said on a September 2022 episode of Today. “They wanted to hang out. They were super sweet. They made me bagels at two in the morning when I came home.”

Kevin was working on a project at the same as Sosie, which meant he was up early making coffee for both of them. Kevin posted one of these morning rituals on Instagram. “Rise and shine or shush and slurp #ASMR with @sosiebacon,” he wrote. “Let’s get to work!”
