Sophia Takla’s journey from Miss Oregon to Elle Woods in ‘Legally Blonde the Musical’

(PORTLAND TRIBUNE) — She has sported blonde hair in recent years, but Sophia Takla admits that she’ll wear a wig when playing lead character Elle Woods in “Legally Blonde the Musical.”

It’s a logistical thing, she said.

“My hair doesn’t hold curl at all. It wouldn’t hold style at all,” Takla said. “It saves so much time, honestly.”

It’s a big role for Takla, 23 and the 2022 Miss Oregon title holder from Portland who finished in the top 10 at Miss America.

She grew up on the stage, acting in Oregon Children’s Theatre plays, and planned to pursue more theater opportunities after graduating from Boston Conservatory at Berklee College of Music with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Takla lives in Portland again, working as program manager for the nonprofit Chelsea Hicks Foundation and studying for her master’s degree in American Journalism from New York University.

And she wanted to do two theater shows — one of them for Portland Panto Players, and the other “Legally Blonde the Musical” for Stumptown Stages, which shows at Winningstad Theatre April 26-May 19.  It stages mostly at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. More: stumptownstages.org.
