Sophia Loren is doing "well" after she fractured her hip and thigh bones in a fall at her Geneva, Switzerland home on Sept. 24.

Loren's manager Carlo Giuisti told PEOPLE that the 89-year-old screen icon is on the mend but will require months of rehab.

"Everything [is] going well," Giuisti said. "At least a few months of rehabilitation are needed."

Loren was hospitalized shortly after her fall and underwent surgery that "went very well," her agent Andrea Giusti previously told the Associated Press. According to her reps, the actress' two sons sons, Carlo Ponti Jr. and Edoardo Ponti are by her side in Switzerland as she recovers.

The Two Women star had just celebrated her 89th birthday on Sept. 20 and was planning on attending an event at her eponymous restaurant but had to cancel due to her accident.

One of the last surviving movie stars of the classic Hollywood era, Loren made her mark first in Italian cinema with films such as 1954's The Gold of Naples and 1955's La Bella Mugnaia, her first of many collaborations with actor Marcello Mastroianni. Hollywood came calling in the late '50s and she signed a five picture deal with Paramount Pictures in 1958.

However, it was the Italian production, 1960's Two Women directed by Vittorio De Sica, that gave Loren a historic Oscar win for Best Actress — the first major Academy Award to go to a non-English language performance.

Loren acted regularly throughout the '60s and '70s but since the '80s she has only sporadically appeared on film and in television. In 2020, she gave a critically-acclaimed performance in the Netflix movie The Life Ahead.
