Loren was set to open a new franchise of her self-named restaurant on Sep. 26, in the Italian city of Bari. There, she was also set to receive honorary citizenship from the port city.

“Fortunately, everything went well and the lady will be back with us very soon,” continued the statement.

Sources also told The Hollywood Reporter that the actress’ sons, Carlo Jr. and Edoardo Ponti, are by her side at the hospital in Switzerland.

In 2020, Edoardo brought his mother out of semi-retirement for his Netflix feature The Life Ahead, which won Loren a David di Donatello Award for best actress. In 2021, she was the subject of the Netflix documentary What Would Sophia Loren Do?

Loren’s last public appearance was Sept. 2, at the Armani “One Night Only” fashion show at the 80th Venice Film Festival. As the evening’s guest of honor, Loren sat in the first row, accompanied by Ponti and his wife, Sasha Alexander.
