What are the Sooners getting in four-star TE commit Luke Hasz?

Lincoln Riley and company have acquired another four-star recruit in Bixby, Oklahoma tight end, Luke Hasz. Hasz chose the Sooners over Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, and Arkansas. Oklahoma has added the No. 2 tight end of the 2023 class to their offensive arsenal.

The heavily sought-after prospect received offers from many top-tier programs across the country and landed with the Crimson and Cream. Given the utilization of multiple tight end sets in Norman and how the program has maximized the talent of Mark Andrews and ascending star Austin Stogner, it is no surprise to see OU land the No. 55 overall player of the 2023 cycle, according to his 247Sports Composite Ranking.

The 6-3, 220-pound mismatch played on both sides of the football as a Sophomore at Bixby High School. He lined up as a receiver and an edge defender, guiding the squad to the 6A-II state title with his playmaking ability. In 2020, Hasz notched 32 receptions for 703 yards and nine touchdowns for the Spartans.

Hasz constantly made splash plays in Bixby’s vertical attack, using his size to create leverage and separation from linebackers and defensive backs. He predominately lined up on the outside of the formation and ran post routes to perfection.

In addition to his fluid route running, Hasz is a willing blocker. To open things up for teammates, he did not shy away from knocking defenders to the ground. His speed and yards-after-catch ability will certainly benefit Riley’s spread. The versatile athlete will be an upcoming cornerstone player for Oklahoma.

With the emergence of pass-heavy offenses at both the NFL and college ranks, nickel packages have become the norm on defense. However, with an increased number of defensive backs on the field and no SAM linebacker, tight ends are becoming harder to contain matched up against smaller DBs. The hybrid position has become a staple in offensive game plans for Lincoln Riley, and OU will continue to incorporate 12 personnel. Luke Hasz will be a key in the future for the Oklahoma Sooners.
