Sonya Eddy Wins Posthumous Daytime Emmy for “General Hospital” 1 Year After Her Death

The actress, who died on Dec. 19, 2022 at the age of 55, played nurse Epiphany Johnson

Sonya Eddy received a posthumous Daytime Emmy Award, nearly one year after her death on Dec. 19, 2022 at the age of 55.

The actress was honored Friday night with the Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Daytime Drama Series for her work on General Hospital. Eddy's producing partner and friend, Tyler Ford, was on hand to accept the honor.

"Well, accepting these flowers is bittersweet. But I know that Sonya would only relish in the sweet," he said.

Ford thanked General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini "for being a faithful friend" and recognized the cast and crew of the show "for embracing her for 16 years."

"I want to thank the Academy for acknowledging her contribution and craft. Sonya never aspired to be an actor," he said. "And while her talent was undeniable, I'm sure that she was more overjoyed for being remembered for how she made people feel onscreen and off."

Eddy played nurse Epiphany Johnson on the long-running soap opera, beginning in 2006. Her final episode was on Oct. 20, 2022. The soap opera's official account on X, formally known as Twitter, congratulated the actress soon after the award was announced.

"Please help us celebrate the late @SonyaEddy on her posthumous @DaytimeEmmys win for Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Daytime Drama Series: Actress. We miss her every single day. #DaytimeEmmys," the post read.

News of her death was announced by Octavia Spencer on Instagram last year.

"My friend @sonyaeddy passed away last night. The world lost another creative angel. Her legions of @generalhospitalabc fans will miss her 💔🕊️ My thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones, friends, and fans," she wrote in a Dec. 20, 2022 post.

Soon after, Valentini released a statement to PEOPLE about her death.

"I am heartbroken about the loss of the incredible Sonya Eddy. I truly loved her not only as an actress, but as a friend. The lights in the hub of the nurse's station will now be a little dimmer, but her spirit and light will live on in both the show and our set. On behalf of the entire GH cast and crew, we send our deepest sympathy to her family, friends, and fans. She will be very missed," his statement read.

Aside from General Hospital, Eddy's television and film credits included Inspector Gadget, Barbershop, Daddy Daycare, Matchstick Men, Bad News Bears, Seven Pounds, The Perfect Game, and Pee-Wee's Big Holiday, Frank and Penelope, V/H/S/99 and Satanic Hispanics.
