Sony has acquired rights in the U.S. and various other territories to Craig Gillespie and Black Bear Pictures’ “Dumb Money.”

Based on the Ben Mezrich book “The Antisocial Network,” the film tells the David and Goliath story of the GameStop squeeze that took Wall Street by storm in January 2021. Sony will distribute the movie in Latin America, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, South Africa, India and select Asian markets.

As TheWrap reported in September, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, Sebastian Stan and Pete Davidson lead the cast in undisclosed roles. Shailene Woodley joined them last week. Production is currently underway.

Rebecca Angelo & Lauren Schuker Blum penned the screenplay, to be directed by “I, Tonya” filmmaker Craig Gillespie. Gillespie, Ryder Picture Company’s Aaron Ryde and Black Bear’s Teddy Schwarzman are producing. Executive producers include Michael Heimler, John Friedberg, Andrew Swett, Angelo, Schuker Blum, Mezrich, Johnny Holland, Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss and Kevin Ulrich, with Black Bear Pictures fully financing the project.

Dumb Money is a classic David-vs.-Goliath tale about how Wall Street was beaten at its own game. It’s a story of our time and the story is timeless,” said Josh Greenstein, President of Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group. “We are excited to be working with Craig, who is a world-class filmmaker.”

Added Joe Matukewicz, Sony Pictures’, Head of Worldwide Acquisitions: “We have long been a fan of Craig Gillespie’s work and it’s fitting that the studio that brought you The Social Network gets the Anti-Social Network, plus we get to be in business once again with stellar producers Teddy Schwarzman and Aaron Ryder.”

UTA Independent Film Group and Black Bear International negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers.
