Sony’s ‘Sausage Party’ Snags Top Spot on DVD, Blu-ray Disc Sales Charts

Sony Pictures topped the national home video sales charts with “Sausage Party,” a computer-animated comedy, aimed at adults, about a sausage trying to figure out the meaning of life.

The film, which earned $97.7 million in theaters, bowed at No. 1 on both the NPD VideoScan overall disc sales chart and the Blu-ray Disc-only chart for the week ended Nov. 13.

It bumped the previous week’s top seller, Paramount’s “Star Trek Beyond,” to No. 2 on both charts. NPD data shows consumers bought 56% as many copies of “Star Trek Beyond” during its second week of release as they did of “Sausage Party” in week one.

Universal Pictures’ “Bad Moms,” which debuted at No. 2 the prior week, just behind “Star Trek Beyond,” slipped to No. 3 on both charts, while 20th Century Fox’s “Independence Day: Resurgence” slid to No. 4, also on both charts.

Rounding out the top five on the overall disc sales chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales, was Warner’s “The Legend of Tarzan,” while 20th Century Fox’s “X-Men: Apocalypse” took the No. 5 spot on NPD’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.

NPD research shows that “Sausage Party” generated 41% of its first-week sales from Blu-ray Disc.

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart, “The Legend of Tarzan” and 20th Century Fox’s “Ice Age: Collision Course” vaulted to No. 1 and No. 2 now that their respective 28-day holdbacks from Redbox are over.

The previous week’s top rental, “Star Trek Beyond,” fell to No. 4, one spot behind Warner’s “Central Intelligence,” which had been No. 2 the prior week.

Rounding out the top five on Home Media Magazine’s rental chart was “X-Men: Apocalypse,” down from No. 3 the previous week.
