EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures Animation is in development on a new fantasy-adventure feature from Matt Braly, the creator of Disney’s multiple Emmy-nominated animated series, Amphibia.

Braly comes to the as-yet-untitled project after working for the studio as a storyboard artist on The Mitchells vs the Machines, the Academy Award-nominated feature produced by Lord Miller, which was released on Netflix in 2021.

Drawing on his own cultural background and personal history, the film tells the story of a young boy who goes on an emotional journey to a fantastical world of Thai spirits where he hopes to have his illness cured. Braly will direct from his script written with Rebecca Sugar (Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe).

Chronicling the adventures of the 13-year-old Thai-American Anne Boonchuy (Brenda Song) within a fantasy world full of frogs, toads, and giant insects, Braly’s show Amphibia ran for three seasons on Disney Channel from 2019-2022. A renowned animator, writer, director, producer, voice actor, and storyboard artist, he previously scored an Annie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Directing in an Animated TV/Broadcast Production, for his work on the beloved Disney Channel series Gravity Falls. Additional credits include Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe and Disney’s Big City Greens.

Braly is also the author of Marcy’s Journal – A Guide to Amphibia, which was released by Tokyopop in 2022.

Next up for Sony Pictures Animation is trilogy closer Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse; original musical adventure film K-Pop: Demon Hunters from directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans; the adult animated comedy Fixed, directed by Genndy Tartakovsky and starring Adam Devine, Idris Elba, Kathryn Hahn, Bobby Moynihan, and Fred Armisen; and an animated series based on the Ghostbusters IP, which will debut exclusively on Netflix.

Braly is repped by Metropolis Talent Agency; Sugar by Fourth Wall Management, UTA, and Goodman, Genow Schenkman.
