Sonic Youth singer-guitarist Thurston Moore reveals 'debilitating' health condition

Sonic Youth singer-guitarist and co-founder Thurston Moore has revealed that he's been privately battling a "debilitating" health condition for several years.

The musician — whose new memoir, Sonic Life, comes out this month — said he will no longer have his U.S. book tour due to the undisclosed illness.

"It utterly bereaves me to pass on the news that I have been advised by my medical team here in the U.K. to cancel my upcoming USA book tour," Moore wrote in an Instagram post on Tuesday. "For years I have been dealing with a long-standing health condition, though it has never seriously stopped me from touring and recording."

He continued, "Regardless, it's always been an underlying issue, and as I reach my mid-60s this year it has become rather, and consistently, debilitating. After a recent consultation, my doctors have strongly advised against me flying anywhere under any circumstance until they get it all sorted out."

Moore called the cancellation "utterly distressing," especially since Sonic Life "means so much" to him and he has been looking forward to talking about the book at various events planned for the weeks ahead.

More than anything, he is bummed that he won't be able to "exchange all manner of Sonic Youth storytelling and arcana" with fans who had previously purchased tickets to the events. "I've been reassured that refunds will be issued to every ticket holder," he wrote. "Fingers firmly crossed I have a chance to make it up to you when I'm cleared for travel again."

He concluded, "As it is, I am grateful to have such an awesome support system of love and attention at this moment. And to know how much love, respect, and appreciation we all share. For now, sending good energy, peace, and love."

Moore, who founded Sonic Youth with his ex-wife, Kim Gordon, and Lee Ranaldo in 1981, announced his memoir back in May.

"Sonic Life tells the story of my childhood and teenage years as I fell in love with music (for the most part unbridled rock and roll) and how it drove me to New York City, where I would co-found Sonic Youth," he wrote on Instagram at the time. "It's an adventure that would take me around the globe throughout the 1980s, '90s, and onward, engaging with the magic music of visionaries, artists, and wild angels turning the world on its ear."

Sonic Life is out Oct. 24.
