Udd-erly extraordinary: New solo exhibition in Wicker Park showcases Ben ‘Bumpy’ Wilson’s unique perspective, art

CHICAGO — It’s every artist’s goal to have their work showcased in a gallery. Sometimes, when that dream comes true, it can be more than just a show.

It can be a lot of fun, too.

Such is the tale of “Bumpy” Wilson, a pretty interesting name for a guy who is currently living a pretty interesting life.

“I do this part-time, which is crazy, because if you saw my apartment you’d think I’d be painting every single minute of every single day,” says Ben Wilson, who goes by the moniker “Bumpy.”

Wilson started his artwork in his parents’ basement, but he just took a big step into adulting when his first-ever solo show — titled “I AM AN AMATEUR ADULT” — recently opened at the Jackson Junge Gallery in Wicker Park.

For Wilson, the opportunity was mind-blowing.

“I was shaking when I got the news that I could put up 13 paintings in this gallery, so it’s astonishing,” he said.

The opportunity came after Wilson submitted his work for a group show at the gallery. It’s a collection featuring a very bovine theme.

“‘Bumpy’ applied for a group show last year with a wonderful piece called ‘Beef Basketball,’ and the staff fell in love,” Jackson Junge Gallery Director Kaitlyn Miller said. “Everybody was freaking out with that painting.”

From rollerblading to alien abduction, much of the show belongs to the bovine.

“I love painting cows, because cows are hilarious. They have personalities,” Wilson explains.

In a world of amateur adults, Wilson’s show is a reminder that in art, a child’s fascination and worldview can bring joy to others.
