‘Solace’ Clip: Anthony Hopkins and Jeffrey Dean Morgan Are on the Trail of a Serial Killer (Exclusive)

Twenty-five years after he first terrified audiences as Chianti-loving serial killer Hannibal Lecter in Jonathan Demme’s The Silence of the Lambs, Anthony Hopkins will assume the role of an investigator on the trail of a mysterious murderer in Solace, an upcoming thriller with a cast that also includes Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Abbie Cornish, and Colin Farrell. However, Hopkins’s character isn’t just an ordinary detective — rather, he’s a man with psychic abilities, and in an exclusive new clip from the film, his powers give him immediate insights into the case.

In director Afonso Poyart’s film, Hopkins’s protagonist is brought back into the police-work fold by his former student (Morgan), who’s now an FBI agent. In the scene above, he receives a briefing on the case from the investigators (including one played by Cornish), who show him crime-scene photos of the killer’s many victims, all of whom have been killed by a stab wound to the base of their skulls. While he listens to the gruesome details, Hopkins is struck with visions of one victim, a young boy, dead on a swing, his ice cream cone dropped on the ground — images that haunt the elder sleuth, who tells Morgan that it’s best if they start their investigation at “the beginning.”

Considering that the film’s headliners — Hopkins, Farrell, and Morgan — are all currently starring in separate, prominent hits of their own (HBO’s Westworld, Warner Bros’ Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and AMC’s The Walking Dead, respectively), Solace will aim to use star power to leave its own high-profile mark at the box office when it debuts in theaters on Dec. 16.
