Sofia Vergara ‘honored to empower’ Arab female dance group with Golden Buzzer

The Lebanese dance group Mayyas auditioned on America’s Got Talent, Tuesday, and the group’s choreographer Nadim revealed they were inspired by former Golden Buzzer recipient Nightbirde to overcome their obstacles and compete.

“I was inspired by so many people, but what's got really got us to audition this year is Nightbirde,” Nadim explained. “She said, ‘We can't wait until life isn't hard anymore before you decide to be happy.’”

Nightbirde, whose real name was Jane Marczewski, was unable to complete her AGT journey due to breast cancer, which she unfortunately succumbed to in February.

Prior to their performance, the group spoke backstage with host Terry Crews about the importance of the competition. “Us being here, standing on the biggest stage of the world, is our only chance to prove to the world what Arab women can do,” said a dancer. “The art we can create. The fights we fight.”

The amazing performance was well received by the judges, especially Sofia Vergara who found it empowering.

“It was the most beautiful, creative dancing I've ever seen,” Vergara said. “I would be so honored to empower you even more in this journey because you deserve it and I want to be part of this!”

Vergara slammed the Golden Buzzer. Now the Mayyas automatically advance to the live rounds, where they will have a chance to impress more viewers and make a powerful statement about women in their nativeland.

“This is to represent what Arabs women, Lebanese women are capable to do,” said one dancer, “And this is a life-changing experience for us.”
