On May 24, 2024, she announced the happy news via Instagram and fans are losing it over Sofia Richie‘s baby’s name for how beautiful, “normal”, and Bridgerton-coded it is. The baby girl is her first after her marriage to her husband Elliot Grainge made headlines around the world in April 2023.

“I found out very, very early,” she told Vogue. “I was about four weeks pregnant. I was on a trip to Milan for Fashion Week, and I was going to the Prada show. I was doing a really quick 24-hour turnaround, and I felt terrible but didn’t think much of it. I thought it was jet lag.”

She continued, revealing she was having a Gemini girl: “We both really thought it was a boy, so it was a true shock. My dream in life is to have a daughter [though], and Elliot is really excited for a girl too. I think it’s so typical for boys to want boys, but he has a lot of sisters. It was really sweet. He’s very sensitive.” Without further ado, read on to find out the special meaning behind Sofia Richie’s baby’s name.

Sofia Richie’s baby’s name

Bron on May 20, 2024, Sofia Richie and Elliot Grainge welcomed their daughter Eloise Samantha Grainge. They announced the happy news four days later on Instagram, with the comments section flooded with praise for her beautiful name. Others made reference to Bridgerton, suggesting fan-favorite Eloise (played by Claudia Jessie) would be so proud.

There are a few interpretations as to what Eloise means. According to TheBump.com, it means “famous warrior”; it may also be derived from the Old German name Helewidis, which meant “healthy” and “wide. Her middle name, Samantha, is presumably a reference to Elliot’s mother, Samantha Berg.

“You can’t call her Lionella,” Sofia’s dad Lionel Richie joked with E! News at The Greatest Night In Pop premiere on January 29. “You know what? I’m gonna leave that to the parents. I’m just gonna be that loving Pop-Pop that comes in the door and spoils the child.”

He continued that raising two daughters, and a son, had its challenges. “When I say that I mean—honestly, Nicole, Nicole—do I have to say any more?” he said. “And then Sofia, do I have to say any more? So, there’s a moment in time when your parents start laughing when you have a kid, I can’t wait to start laughing because it’s at that point now where I said, ‘You’re having a little girl, mm-hmm.'”

He said though that he loves being a granddad. “I’m in Pop-Pop position,” he added. “I look forward to my relationship [with her] because that’s the part I love the most. With all of my kids, I love my relationships and each one has their own personality.”

In her interview with Vogue accounting her pregnancy, Sofia explained how she was learning more about her body than ever before. “I’ve learned more in the past six months than I have in my entire life,” she admitted. “And also just like what the female body is capable of. Every week brings new things, whether it’s hormonal shifts or expansion—there’s just so much our bodies go through, and it’s so interesting to experience it all.”

Needless to say, this is going to be one stylish infant. “From the moment I found out I was pregnant, I have been going crazy online,” she told Vogue. “I have so many ideas—just cute and girly,” saving plenty of well-loved pieces over the years. “I’ve held onto things, and thought, ‘Oh my daughter will have this one day,’” she says. “I have a lot of little bags to pass down. I have a lot in mind.”
