Sofia Coppola's 2 Daughters: All About Romy and Cosima

The Priscilla director shares two children, Romy and Cosima, with husband Thomas Mars

Sofia Coppola may be an Oscar-winning filmmaker, but she prefers to keep her family life out of the spotlight.

The Priscilla director welcomed her first child, daughter Romy Mars, with the lead singer of Phoenix, Thomas Mars, in 2006. They also share another daughter, Cosima Mars, born in 2010. In August 2011, the couple married in a civil ceremony in Southern Italy, with 80 guests in attendance, including their children.

After becoming a mom of two, Coppola told PEOPLE at a screening of her 2010 film Somewhere that being a filmmaker and a mother takes a lot of organization.

“I’m always asking working mothers questions,” she said. “I’m trying to figure it all out because I feel like I’m just learning. Having a really great nanny to help me while I’m working so I don’t worry and know that they’re taken care of [is key].”

“Luckily movies are really intense and then you get a break in between work,” Coppola added. “I’m not working 9-5, so that’s nice.”

Romy Mars, 16

Coppola and Mars welcomed their daughter Romy on Nov. 28, 2006. Before the filmmaker gave birth to Romy, she told USA Today the month prior that she was struggling to pick out a name for her daughter.

"We’re going to wait and see,” Coppola said. “When you’re writing, you pick names for characters, but it’s harder in real life."

Coppola eventually landed on a meaningful moniker as Romy is named after her brother, screenwriter and producer Roman Coppola, according to the Financial Times. The Lost in Translation director told the outlet she has a close bond with her sibling, who has worked on all her films and “really understands” her.

In 2017, Coppola opened up to The Guardian about why she chooses to keep both her daughters out of the public eye.

“I don’t want them ever to be jaded,” she said. “I never saw the point of taking little kids to movie premieres and stuff. I just want them to have a childhood.”

While Coppola protects Romy’s privacy, her daughter enjoys performing behind the scenes. The filmmaker told the Financial Times in 2023 that her older daughter is “into music and acting.” She also shared that she often takes her daughters on set because “it’s exciting to see all the different things you can do.”

Romy rarely makes public appearances, but she did attend a Marc Jacobs fashion show with Coppola in February 2020. She also made her modeling debut that same year, appearing in a fashion campaign for Marc Jacobs’ sub-brand, Heaven by Marc Jacobs. The designer shared Romy’s portraits on Instagram, which showed her modeling T-shirts and hoodies from the brand’s latest collection.

Though she has no public social media accounts, she secretly posted a TikTok in March 2023 that went viral. In the since-deleted video, the teen shared that she had recently been grounded because she "tried to charter a helicopter from New York to Maryland on my dad's credit card because I wanted to have dinner with my camp friend."

She also revealed that she chose to film the TikTok since she was "already grounded" and her parents' "biggest rule is I'm not allowed to have any public social media accounts." Romy said her mom and dad have this rule because they don’t want her “to be a nepotism kid.”

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in August 2023, Coppola commented about her less-than-thrilled reaction to the incident.

"We were raised to be so private and social media is so opposite of how I grew up," she said. "So, it was the best way for her to be rebellious."

"I got a lot of compliments on her filmmaking. And comedy. She's funny. But people discussing my parenting publicly is not what I would've hoped for," Coppola added.

Cosima Mars, 13

Coppola and Mars welcomed their second child, Cosima, on May 18, 2010. A few months after becoming a mom of two, the director told PEOPLE she loves to see her girls bonding.

“The baby’s only 6 months old, but today I put her in the bed with Romy and they were looking at books — it was cute to see them together,” she said. “We just got Olivia Goes to Venice so we were reading that.”

The year Cosima was born, Coppola and her family moved from Paris to New York City, per The Guardian.

“We live in the West Village, which feels like its own different world, the kids go to school there, and it’s a nice place to be,” Coppola told the outlet. “Tom’s band is still based in Paris, and there’s our French family, so we’ll go there in the summer. So we get a bit of both."

Like Romy, Cosima is rarely seen in public. But, despite their life out of the spotlight, Coppola also shared with The Guardian that watching films at home is a favorite pastime for her daughters.

“The girls love them, but they have really bad taste!” she said. “I feel like I was exposed to all these great movies at their age, but if there’s anything classic, they’re like no, we’re not watching an old movie. So that’s funny.”

In August 2023, Coppola told Vanity Fair that it makes her happy when her “daughters say that their friends like my work” and had recently shown Cosima one of her most notable movies with Kirsten Dunst.

“The younger one hasn’t seen all of my movies, but they begrudgingly like my movies,” she said. “I showed the younger one Marie Antoinette before we went to visit Versailles recently and she was like, ‘I liked it.’ She admitted she liked it, but of course teenagers don’t want to like their mom’s stuff.”
