Navigating life after divorce can be challenging for anyone in the public eye. There is always pressure for celebrities, namely famous women, to come out on the other side of divorce reinvented in every sense of the word and ready for something new. This is something Sofía Vergara, whose divorce from fellow actor Joe Manganiello after seven years of marriage back in July dominated the news cycle, knows all too well.

The Modern Family star opened up about her hopes and dreams for life post-divorce, but don’t expect anything too Eat, Pray, Love from the 51-year-old star.

“I’ve had a very interesting year,” Vergara told a People reporter. ”I don’t want to say ‘bad’ or anything like that, but it’s been very interesting and very difficult.”

“I went through a divorce this year, the SAG strike that went on for so long. I’ve seen my friends struggle — some had to take their kids out of their schools or had problems with their mortgages, so it’s been a weird, weird year,” she continued.

When asked if she thought 2024 would be a “fresh start” for her following her split and the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, she said “I hope so,” but also addressed the choice of words.

“I don’t know if there’s such a thing as a fresh start at 51… I don’t know if I’m fresh anymore, but I’m just excited,” Vergara explained.

While many, including Vergara’s rumored new boyfriend and rapper Bad Bunny would argue that Vergara has always been fresh, it is cool to see Vergara taking the time to examine the language that is often thrown at women, especially ones over the age of 50, following a divorce. It also challenges the notion that after a divorce, someone simply has to start their entire life over “fresh.” After all, Vergara and Manganiello spent seven years married, and it doesn’t seem like Vergara is interested in simply throwing away all of that experience she gained throughout their marriage.

Instead, Vergara is looking forward to some of her latest career endeavors. “I’m excited for the TV show that is coming,” she said of her upcoming Netflix series Griselda. “I’m excited for Toty, which has been doing really well since we started and people are loving it because it’s such a good quality product,” she added of her newfound skincare line aimed at not making aging “stop,” but making it “less horrific.”

“You have to accept that we’re all going to age, and it’s you know… normal,” Vergara explained to The Messenger last week. Another part of aging is accepting that while leaving a relationship that ultimately isn’t serving you could be one of the hardest things to do — and writing it all off to start off “fresh” isn’t necessarily the right move for everyone.
