Sofía Vergara Gets Real About the Heartbreaking Reason Her Joe Manganiello Marriage Ended

Sofía Vergara has kept relatively quiet about her split from Joe Manganiello until now. It seems that the initial reported reasons for their divorce were right on the money — all it took was a brave reporter to ask for the truth.
The reason is heartbreaking and Vergara’s honesty might help another couple in a similar situation be very clear about their intentions ahead of marriage. It appears that the Modern Family star’s age gap with Manganiello eventually caught up to them. It was Spanish newspaper, El País, that asked why their marriage of seven years ended in 2023 and she was quite frank about it. “Well, I’m newly divorced from my second husband, who I was with for 10 years. My marriage broke up because my husband was younger,” she said. “He wanted to have kids and I didn’t want to be an old mom.”

While there are only four years between them, the couple’s family timeline was very different. Vergara had her son Manolo in 1991 with her first husband, Joe Gonzalez, and she didn’t meet Manganiello until her early 40s. “I feel it’s not fair to the baby. I respect whoever does it, but that’s not for me anymore,” she noted. “I had a son at 19, who is now 32, and I’m ready to be a grandmother, not a mother.”
Vergara didn’t make it clear whether she and Manganiello had discussed having a family before they got married. However, she had frozen pre-embryos with her ex-fiancé, Nick Loeb, which led to a court battle over custody rights that wasn’t settled until 2021. She might have been open to expanding her family at one point, but the legal issues might have also changed her mind.
Manganiello is currently in a relationship with 34-year-old actress Caitlin O’Connor while Vergara remains single. The end of her marriage didn’t leave her bitter about love, but she does have a few rules for next time. “So, if love comes along, he has to come with [his own] children,” Vergara explained. “I’m almost in menopause, it’s the natural way of things. When my son becomes a dad, let him bring the baby to me for a while and then I’ll give it back to him and go on with my life. That’s what I have to do.”
