Sofía Vergara probably didn’t want to end her 2023 this way, but she’s being dragged into court by her contractors who renovated her Los Angeles estate. They are alleging that she didn’t pay two invoices from March and July of this year, and they are now suing her for a whopping $1,700,492.64.

The lawsuit was filed on Nov. 27, according to the court documents obtained by People, by Reside Custom Homes (RCH). The company is accusing her of “breach of contract, promissory fraud, and intentional interference with contractual relations.” While the contractor is looking to get paid, the 51-year-old actress is fighting back via her lawyer, Martin Singer. He shared a statement with the media outlet: “My client made claims against the contractor, Reside, several months before this specious lawsuit was filed. Sofia Vergara’s claims were for significant overcharging by Reside, substandard and negligent work, and long delays seeking damages in excess of $5 million.”

Singer doesn’t seem too worried about the legal action, noting, “We are confident that my client will prevail in this dispute.” Vergara bought the Beverly Park villa in 2020 while she was married to Joe Manganiello, but the actress reportedly owns the home with her business partner, CEO and founder of Latin World Entertainment Luis Balaguer. The 17,000-square-foot estate looks like an Italian resort and boasts seven bedrooms and 10.5 bathrooms in an A-list Los Angeles neighborhood. Vergara’s neighbors include Denzel Washington, Eddie Murphy, and Kimora Lee Simmons — we want an invite to that holiday party!

While the Modern Family star’s lawyer is complaining about substandard work, RCH claimed that she kept asking for “additional work to be done on the home” with special requests for plaster that “had to be sourced from a small, rural town in the United Kingdom.” After Vergara reportedly “promised” to get the company “paid in full,” she has neglected to pay the tab and a mechanic’s lien was placed on the home in August. In addition, RCH doesn’t have nice things to say about the actress either.

“Throughout the duration of RCH’s work on the Property, Vergara would routinely engage in aggressive outbursts and would humiliate, ridicule, harass, and seek to intimidate RCH’s employees, representatives, and subcontractors, among others,” the documents read. “Vergara’s outbursts became so frequent and severe that it became difficult for RCH to keep subcontractors engaged and willing to continue working on the Project.” This lawsuit already sounds contentious, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see a settlement negotiated quickly because Vergara will probably want to avoid any negative press generated by the lawsuit. It doesn’t sound like a fun renovation at all.
