‘Society of the Snow’ Is a Netflix Hit, Outperforming ‘Maestro’ and ‘May December’

Nearly six months after its release, and perfectly timed to its powerful awards momentum, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” (Universal), now renting for $5.99 ahead of its unannounced Peacock debut, repeats as #1 at iTunes and Google Play this week.

Both platforms rank by transactions. “Trolls Band Together,” also Universal and still renting at $19.99, is #1 at Vudu, where revenue determines the top 10. They list “Oppenheimer” #3, tops among lower-priced entries, reinforcing its draw. “Trolls” is second at iTunes, #5 at Google Play.

“Society of the Snow,” a stealth Oscar contender from Spain director J.A. Bayona, is #2 at Netflix — besting its high-profile originals “Maestro” and “May December,” both of which ranked for only a few days and at lower positions.

“Snow,” which is Spain’s Oscar submission, is following the path of “All Quiet on the Western Front” last year as a non-English language success on the platform. It’s just behind “The Equalizer 3” for the second week, another Sony theatrical release that uses Netflix as its streaming home.

There have been fewer straight-to-home releases in the top 10, but “The Bricklayer” (Vertical) from veteran action director Renny Harlin (“Die Harder 2,” “Cliffhanger”) stars Aaron Eckhart as a retired FBI agent brought back on special assignment. It is #7 at iTunes, #6 at Vudu (it rents for $9.99).

There’s also renewed interest in two of the year’s most acclaimed releases. “Anatomy of a Fall” (Neon) is #4 at iTunes, while “Past Lives” (A24) is #6 at iTunes and #10 at Vudu. They rent as $6.99 and $4.99, respectively.

Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” (Paramount), ahead of its Apple streaming debut on Friday, was top five everywhere and #2 at iTunes. It has stayed at $19.99 rather than a normal pre-streaming price cut, a move that could maximize streaming interest and reduce lower-price alternatives. Two other films, both still PVOD, made all three lists with “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” (Lionsgate) and “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.”

Daniel Levy’s “Good Grief” (he doubles as actor), about a man recovering from the deaths of his mother and husband by taking a trip to Paris, is #5 at Netflix. It’s another case of subscribers finding interest in an original movie without the accompanying awards hooplah.
