David Martí and Montse Ribé won Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the 2007 Oscars for Guillermo del Toro‘s “Pan’s Labyrinth.” Seventeen years later the duo earned their second Academy Award nomination for their work on J.A. Bayona‘s “Society of the Snow.” In a recent chat with Gold Derby, the makeup team admit they are “amazed” to be back in the running along with their collaborator on the Netflix film, Ana López-Puigcerver. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

“The process is quite different because on ‘Pan’s Labyrinth,’ from the ideas that Guillermo had, we did a design,” Ribé explains. “It’s completely fantasy, even if you took some real references. But in ‘Society,’ everything was based on reality. We had the responsibility to be accurate because the survivors are still alive. Everybody’s going to see the movie.”

While López-Puigcerver was responsible for textures, like the appearance of frostbit faces and chapped lips, Martí and Ribé focused on prosthetics and makeup that detailed injuries survivors sustained in the plane crash. They also transformed the actors’ appearances to make them look thinner as time passed on the mountain. “We made prosthetic chins, cheek bones and teeth,” says Ribé. “We realized that on the real pictures of the survivors, you can see the teeth [protruding outward].”

Martí describes making prosthetic legs to show how thin the survivors were when they returned home. When we see a doctor cut the pants off one of the men, “The legs of the guy are inside the bed,” he says. “And then we put the fake ones on top and they are movable. So when you see that shot and when you see it in theaters, the very interesting thing is that everybody in the theater is like, ‘Oh wow.’ It shocks a lot when you see those legs.”

“Society of the Snow” is also nominated for Best International Film at the 96th Academy Awards. The movie tells the true story of a rugby team whose flight crashes on a glacier in the Andes. The few passengers who survive the crash find themselves in one of the world’s toughest environments to survive. The movie is currently streaming on Netflix.
