‘Snow In Midsummer’ Heads Nominations For Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards

Snow In Midsummer, directed by Malaysia’s Chong Keat-aun, leads the race for this year’s Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan with nine nominations, including best narrative feature, best director and best supporting actress (Wan Fang).

The film, which is a collaboration between Malaysia, Taiwan and Singapore, also has nods for best adapted screenplay, best cinematography, best makeup & costume design, best original film score, best original film song and best sound effects.

Taiwanese features Marry My Dead Body and Eye Of The Storm were not far behind, with eight nominations apiece. Marry My Dead Body, which is also Taiwan’s submission for Best International Feature at the upcoming Oscars, was nominated for best narrative feature, best director, two best leading actors nods (Hsu Kuang-han and Austin Lin), best adapted screenplay, best action choreography, best original film song and best editing.

Eye Of The Storm has nods for best narrative feature, best leading actor (Wang Po-chieh), best cinematography, best visual effects, best art direction, best original film score, best film editing and best sound effects.

Four films racked up seven nods apiece – Wong Ching-po’s The Pig, The Snake And The Pigeon and Hsiao Ya-chuan’s Old Fox, which were both nominated for best director, as well as Taiwan’s Trouble Girl and Malaysia’s Abang Adik. Stonewalling, co-directed by Ji Huang and Ryûji Otsuka, and Hong Kong director Nick Cheuk’s Time Still Turns The Pages round out the best narrative feature category.

Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards have long been recognised as the most prestigious awards ceremony for Chinese-language cinema, but have been boycotted by mainland China since 2018 when a documentary award winner made a reference to Taiwan’s independence during her acceptance speech.

This year’s awards are scheduled to take place on November 25 at the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei City.

As previously announced, Ang Lee has been named president of this year’s Golden Horse Awards jury. The award for Outstanding Taiwanese Filmmaker of the Year will be presented to producer Lin Shih-ken (The Bold, The Corrupt, And The Beautiful) while Lifetime Achievement Awards will go to Brigitte Lin and Chen Kun-hou.
