"All of Eric's traps didn't work," Day says of the sketch.

Even the stars of Saturday Night Live have to learn to kill their darlings.

Mikey Day, who has been part of the long-running comedy show since 2013, says though there have been tons of sketches that he's loved that never made it to air, there is one in particular that stands out to him. During a recent appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show he revealed that the sketch in question didn't even make it to dress rehearsal, but he loved it nonetheless.

"It was around Christmastime and we wrote — this was years back when Trump was still president at the time — and it was a Home Alone [spoof], and Eric Trump was left home alone in Trump Tower," Day told Clarkson and fellow guests Dionne Warwick and Damon Elliott. "And so Don Jr. had to go back and, [he said,] 'I’ve gotta get back to New York, Eric’s home alone,' and there were investigators coming in in place of the burglars." (Day and costar Alex Moffatt frequently played Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump on SNL.)

Clarkson, through her laughter, asked Day why the sketch got cut. "Well, it didn’t even get picked, so it didn’t even make it to the place where it could be cut, but all of Eric’s traps didn’t work," Day explained. "He was like hosing down the carpet. And we were a little bummed because, obviously, Home Alone’s a classic. But, you know, every week there’s stuff."

So, that sketch didn't pan out, but Day has another idea for something he'd like to see on SNL. He told Clarkson he wants to see her host the show, which she pretty quickly shot down.

“I don’t think I’m funny like that. Like I can be witty at times, like just talking, but I don’t think I’m funny like that. I did do a couple skits one time though when I went to sing there," she said. Clarkson last performed on SNL in January 2012, her third stint as musical guest.
