The Tonight Show emcee hasn’t hosted SNL since December 2013, long before the Internet came down on him for playing with then-presidential candidate Donald Trump’s mystifying mane last September. Having already addressed the controversy not once, but twice, this weekend’s SNL avoided mention of the PR nightmare altogether, even when Fallon appeared as Jared Kushner opposite Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump in the cold open.
By the time Fallon got to his monologue, the focus had shifted to SNL having its first-ever fully live episode, where he was joined by Chic’s Nile Rodgers, musical guest Harry Styles and an audience full of professional dancers, who partook as part of a rousing rendition of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” (embedded above). Other memorable moments included Melissa McCarthy’s return as White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer and a cameo by Rachel Dratch.

CELEBIRTY FAMILY FEUD: TIME TRAVEL EDITION
Fallon was perhaps most impressive in this game show sketch, where he managed to make the quick costume changes necessary to play both the 1977 and 2017 versions of John Travolta. In terms of actual impressions, Cecily Strong’s Liza Minnelli couldn’t be topped, with Sasheer Zamata’s Diana Ross a close second. Styles’ Mick Jagger, on the other hand, left much to be desired. (His later appearance as a virtuosic Civil War soldier wasn’t particularly interesting either.)
BEFORE THE SHOW
Anyone who was ever been in a school play can appreciate this gem of a pre-taped sketch, which showed middle schoolers obsessing over their upcoming production of Legally Blonde, only for their pretentious behind-the-scenes banter to be intercut with clips of the play going horribly wrong.
TAKE ME BACK
Jen has the worst luck when it comes to men, doesn’t she? To say much of anything would spoil this one, but if you happen to recognize Beck Bennett’s character, you know exactly where this sketch is going.
SULLY & DENISE
It wasn’t the funniest sketch of the night, but it’s hard not to be amused by the reunion of Boston’s most obnoxious lovebirds. Fallon and Dratch are clearly having a blast, and the energy they bring to it makes up for the fact that the material itself is lacking.
