Bad Bunny got more than a little help from some friends during his first time hosting Saturday Night Live, marking the second week in a row that NBC’s sketch comedy series has leaned hard into surprise cameos.

For last week’s season premiere, SNL found work for NFL player Travis Kelce (in an NFL on Fox sketch) and pop star Taylor Swift (who introduced musical guest Ice Spice’s second performance).

This weekend, for starters, during the opening monologue, host/musical guest Bad Bunny aka Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio brought out someone to help translate his Spanish — Pedro Pascal, who hosted SNL back in February and of course stars on The Mandalorian and The Last of Us.

Soon after, SNL vet Fred Armisen appeared in a pre-taped bit about a Spanish king (played by Bad Bunny). Then, during a send-up of a melodramatic Spanish soap opera, a fight between brothers played by Bad Bunny and Marcelo Hernandez was interrupted by their papa, played by Mick Jagger (whose Rolling Stones just dropped their first album of original music since 2005). Jagger’s previous SNL visits include two hosting gigs and four appearances as musical guest.

And before the episode was even half over, Bad Bunny’s first musical performance was introduced by none other than Lady Gaga — no stranger to SNL either, having hosted once and served as musical guest four times (most recently seven years ago).

(Were there even more cameos after that? You’ll let me know, I am off to bed.)

Last week’s Season 49 premiere, hosted by Pete Davidson with musical guest Ice Spice and the Travis/Taylor cameos, delivered 4.8 million viewers and a 0.96 in the coveted 18-49 demo (in Live+Same Day numbers). That marked a 19% increase in total audience and a 31% rise in the demo vs. last year’s Season 48 premiere, as well as the long-running sketch comedy series’ best demo delivery for a season opener since 2020.

What do you think of SNL‘s new, apparent theme of surprise guest stars? And which of this week’s unexpected cameos delighted you the most?
