Colin Jost and Michael Che don’t want people to be cheated out of a revelrous St. Patrick’s day.

Because 2024 is a leap year, the holiday skips Saturday and falls on a Sunday. So the Saturday Night Live “Weekend Update” co-anchors have partnered with Jameson Irish Whiskey to promote “St. Patrick’s Eve,” complete with a countdown celebration they’ll be hosting in Times Square on March 16.

“We don't really like doing brand deals; that's not our thing,” Che tells PEOPLE. “But for a really good cause, like leap year, I mean we had to.”

Che predicts it will be “possibly the greatest holiday that'll ever exist. Even though we just found out about it, it feels like we've been celebrating it forever,” he jokes.

As for their upcoming event, Jost tells PEOPLE, “I think this is going to be at least the second biggest countdown of the year that happens in Times Square. Top two, for sure.”

Che’s drink of choice is a whiskey ginger, which Jost says was his go-to beverage on the road when he was doing standup.

When asked which SNL cast member is the most fun to drink with, Jost says, “I feel like we've had some Jameson ginger ales with the PDD guys,” referring to the comedy group Please Don't Destroy, which consists of Ben Marshall, John Higgins and Martin Herlihy.

As New York City natives, the duo reflected on their past St. Patrick’s Day memories.

“Obviously, St Patrick's Day is a big deal in New York,” Che says. “I just always love that everybody's kind of in the same spirit together. It's very rare that a city this big finds something that we could all agree on and it's just kind of cool to see everybody on the same page and having a good time.”

“Did you ever march in the parade, Che?” Jost asks.

“March in the parade? What am I, a cop? No, I never marched in the parade, but I've seen it maybe 40 times,” Che responds.

Jost was part of the annual tradition as a kid with his mom and his grandfather, who was a firefighter. “I never thought about it until now, but it's crazy to be in the parade and watch people watching the parade as a kid,” he says.

Now with a child of his own — Jost shares 2-year-old son Cosmo with wife Scarlett Johansson — Jost is making memories for him in the kitchen.

Recently, “I did make one meal for my family, which I was pretty proud of,” he says. “It was a really seasoned salmon over Mediterranean rice with feta and tomato and olives and all that.”

“You made that?” Che asks.

“I swear to God, made it,” Jost replies.

Asks Che: “Well, why? Did you see a recipe or something, or what inspired you to make a Mediterranean dish for your family?”

“I'm now on duty of making dinner once a week, so I needed to look up what I could possibly do. Now, that seemed like one that I could do,” Jost explains.

When Jost and Che were on their usual SNL duty in October, they had two very exciting guests: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. Che says he was “so surprised” when they turned up.

“I was freaking out, honestly, because it's obviously a very exciting thing,” he adds.

“I saw them in the hallway,” Jost recalls. “I also didn't know whether they'd want to do anything or just sort of lay low, but then they just popped into a couple of things, which was fun.”

“Yeah, it was insanity,” Che says. “Pandemonium, as we call it in the business.”
