Smashing Pumpkins Cover David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity,’ Hole’s ‘Malibu’: Watch

The Smashing Pumpkins kicked off its 19-date Plainsong tour Tuesday night (March 22) in Portland with a show that included covers of songs by David Bowie, Hole and Rolling Stones.

Early in the nostalgia-laden acoustic set, Billy Corgan and Co. paid homage to the Thin White Duke with a rendition of the late British artist’s classic from 1969, “Space Oddity.”

Smashing Pumpkins Announce ‘Acoustic-Electro’ North American Tour, Liz Phair to Open 

The ‘90s rockers also tackled “Malibu”, which appeared on Hole’s 1998 album Celebrity Skin and was co-written with Corgan. The Pumpkins went deep into their own catalog with renditions of “Tonight, Tonight”, “Thirty-Three”, “Today”, “Disarm”, “1979” and others, and they found time to cover the Rolling Stones’ “Angie” as an encore.

The Smashing Pumpkins’ touring lineup includes original drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, and multi-instrumentalist Jeff Schroeder. Chamberlin has not been a full-time member since 2009, though he did drum on the band’s 2015 live dates.

According to a press release, the group will commence work on a new album “inspired by the sounds explored in the new acoustic setting” after the “acoustic-electro” tour is over.
