A small plane crashed and overturned while making a landing Wednesday night at Weltzien Skypark airport in Guilford Township, Medina County.

The pilot had minor injuries, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

The plane, a 2018 Vans Kit Model, had a mechanical malfunction while landing and continued off the north end of the runway, struck a guard rail and overturned. The call came in about 9:38 p.m. at the privately owned airport, which is west of Wadsworth and just south of Interstate 76.

FAA investigating

The pilot was identified as Gary R. Kohler, 78, from Dalton. He had minor injuries and was treated on scene by emergency medical workers, the highway patrol said.

The Federal Aviation Administration is handling the investigation, the highway patrol said.
