Small Business Saturday, craft shows, parades and football top Delaware fun: Weekend Guide

With the turkey and stuffing mostly a memory (hopefully, you still have some left for sandwiches), it's time to turn our attention to winter holidays.

Are you decorating the outside of your house or your yard this weekend? If so, be sure to consider adding your address to our holiday lights map and contribute to fighting hunger in Delaware.

If you're out and about this weekend, plan for a high of 43 degrees and partly cloudy Saturday in the Wilmington region; Sunday should be slightly warmer at 51 degrees with some showers in the afternoon.

Wilmington Jaycees Christmas Parade

The jolly man in a big red suit will have all eyes on him at Delaware's largest holiday stroll: the 59th annual Wilmington Jaycees Christmas Parade. The parade route starts at Second and Market streets and then travels north on Market past the review stand at 10th and Market in Wilmington. The route ends at 11th and Market.   

Your kids can bring their letters to Santa at the event. Letters need a return address so Santa can write the children back.

Schellville is back in Rehoboth Beach

The hugely popular Christmas extravaganza that is Schellville is open in Rehoboth Beach.

Schell Brothers, a homebuilding company ubiquitous to the Delaware beaches, is in its sixth year of hosting Schellville. It's a 5.5-acre Christmas village full of everything anyone looking to indulge in the Christmas spirit could hope for - and it's free.

"It's like a Christmas playground for everyone," Schell Brothers' spokesperson Alyssa Titus says in a promotional video.

'Rooted' in diverse children's art exhibit

Original artwork created for eight children's books are on view in a new exhibit that aims to bring families together in "Rooted: Family and Nature in Contemporary Children’s Book Illustration."

From feeling gratitude after experiencing the beauty of nature to finding happiness after spending time with loved ones, the exhibit offers illustrations that depict a diverse group of protagonists who encounter major moments in their everyday lives.

The eight award-winning artists represented in this presentation include Micha Archer, Sophie Blackall, Cozbi A. Cabrera, Joe Cepeda, Devon Holzwarth, Juana Martinez-Neal, Frank Morrison and Qing Zhuang.

Brandywine Museum of Art (1 Hoffman's Mill Road, Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania). Museum is open 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Mondays. Closed Tuesdays. Exhibit is on view through Wednesday, Feb. 28. Admission is $8 to $20. Free for kids age 5 or younger and members of the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art.
