Small is big in 'Mini Masterpiece' exhibit at Society of the Four Arts

Great things can come in small sizes. At least that's true for a special exhibit at the King Library at the Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach.

Amanda Kiernan, programming librarian, and Autumn Hamann, librarian associate, encouraged summer visitors of all ages and skill levels to create mini masterpieces on canvases of 4 inches by 4 inches with markers, crayons, pencils or magazine images.

''August is usually a quiet period at the library, so this year we decided to try out a creative activity that not only celebrated individual artistic expression but also promoted a sense of community. This project welcomed artists from all backgrounds, including library members, Four Arts members, community residents, and even passing tourists exploring the Four Arts,'' Kiernan stated.

Those works have now been collected to share with the public.

The "Mini Masterpiece" exhibit, consisting of 70 entries, is on display until November. Visitors to the library are being asked to cast a vote for their favorite.

''The result of this project is nothing short of magical. The diverse, distinct mini masterpieces, though individually unique, together form a beautiful collection of artistic expression,'' Kiernan said.

The Four Arts, now in its 87th year, has a variety of programs at its Palm Beach campus but emphasizes its marquee art exhibits, concerts and speakers series for the season. Some of that lineup was announced recently.

The season's first art exhibition opens Nov. 18 at the O’Keeffe Gallery with a selection of paintings, prints and drawings promised to the New-York Historical Society. The exhibit, "Scenes of New York City: The Elie and Sarah Hirschfeld Collection," contains images of celebrated New York landmarks, parks and people by an illustrious list of artists including Marc Chagall, Andy Warhol, Childe Hassam, Jacob Lawrence and Theresa Bernstein. The show runs through Jan. 28.
