Our feature series Origins provides artists with a space to break down everything that went into their latest release. Today, Slow Hollows take us through their new single, “Tired.”

Los Angeles indie rockers Slow Hollows have dropped the latest single from their upcoming album, Bullhead. “Tired” is a dreamy track, dipping ever so slightly into shoegaze antics, and boasts a peaceful, ambient outro.

The song allows listeners to float away with the sound, soaking up its sonic wooziness and falling in love with its lackadaisical, heartfelt lyrics. “The main image that inspired this song is wasting time with someone you love,” says frontman Austin Feinstein.

This theme is echoed in the singular line that essentially functions as the song’s chorus. “I’m tired of everybody but you,” he sings, leaving the subtext up to interpretation.

There’s an obsessive, co-dependent read not just for the statement, but also one inspired by what Feinstein describes as the main theme of the song: “Working to ignore knee-jerk reactions and embracing a careless outlook.”

Taking this more optimistic viewpoint, the song can be seen as an act of accepting the flaws of life and ultimately choosing to process them by spending time with a loved one. Listen to the new track, “Tired,” below, and read on for the band’s breakdown of the song’s inspirations.

Bullhead drops March 8th via Danger Collective, and the band will embark on a spring US tour. See the schedule below, and get tickets here.

Wasting Time with Loved Ones:

The main image that inspired this song is wasting time with someone you love. I kept thinking about going on walks and how that usually solves everything. There isn’t much to it, but it offered a sense of levity that I don’t usually pull from when writing songs.

Letting Go:

For me, the “theme” of this song is probably letting go: working to ignore knee-jerk reactions and embracing a careless outlook. There’s also an element of forgiveness in this song.

Guitar Layering:

Heavy guitar layering was the sonic theme of this song. We relied on these guitars to give the song its tension because the chords underneath are generally very simple.

The H3000 was a huge influence on this song. We wanted the outro to feel like a wave of sound and this piece of gear did the trick.

Old Demos:

This song took a very long time to arrange and I ended up getting married to a lot of the old demo ideas and had a hard time letting them go. One version in particular that I couldn’t shake was this looped guitar demo I had made that never progressed beyond the short loop. I couldn’t stand to watch it go so we used it as the song’s ending.
