Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein Responds to Questions About Janet Weiss’ Departure: ‘We Tried’

Two weeks ago, Sleater-Kinney drummer Janet Weiss announced she was leaving the band after 23 years.

In the comments of a recent Instagram post from Carrie Brownstein, a fan asked, “Why haven’t y’all made a statement about her leaving? People are buying tickets to your tour. Many of us bought them expecting Janet to be a part of it, and we want to know what’s up.”

“What am I supposed to say? She left.” Brownstein responded in a lengthy comment posted by Uproxx. “We asked her to stay. We tried. It’s hard and sad.”

“The band is heading in a new direction and it is time for me to move on,” Weiss wrote in her original statement shared to Twitter, adding that her decision to depart came after “intense deliberation and with heavy sadness.”

Sleater-Kinney released the singles “The Future Is Here” and “Hurry on Home” ahead of upcoming album The Center Won’t Hold, out August 16 via Mom + Pop. The record follows 2015’s No Cities to Love. The band’s accompanying tour is still scheduled to kick off Sept. 5 in Raleigh, N.C.
