A slate of top-tier violinists will perform Indianapolis concerts starting this fall

The Circle City will play host to six concerts with some of the world's top violinists. The International Violin Competition of Indianapolis' Laureate Series will begin in October, starring several of its winners and medalists over the last few decades as well as top-tier classical musicians touring the world today.

To name a few: Julian Rhee, who won the silver medal in September, will return to perform. In a concert that includes Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center leaders, 2018 Gold Medalist Richard Lin will play a program of Beethoven, Shostakovich and Dvořák.

'Quintessential Paganini and Ysaÿe'

Oct. 10 at the Indiana History Center, 450 W. Ohio St.

2018 Silver Medalist Risa Hokamura and official competition pianist Melivia Raharjo will perform a program that includes works by Paganini as well as Sonatas for Solo Violin, Op. 27, Nos. 1, 3 and 5 by Eugène Ysaÿe — who taught competition founder Josef Gingold.

Rhee performs Mendelssohn

Jan. 20, 2024, at the Schrott Center for the Arts at Butler University, 610 W. 46th St.

2022 Silver Medalist Rhee and the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra will play Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto. Single tickets for this concert must be purchased via the orchestra, and more information is available at icomusic.org.

2018 Gold Medalist Richard Lin, violist Timothy Ridout, pianist Wu Han and cellist David Finckel will perform Beethoven's Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello in E-flat major, Op. 1, No. 1; Shostakovich's Sonata in D minor for Cello and Piano, Op. 40; and Dvořák's Quartet in E-flat for Piano, Violin, Violin and Cello, Op. 87.

The competition organization and Ensemble Music Society of Indianapolis are partnering on the production, which will be live streamed and available on demand.

'IVCI Celebrates Indianapolis'

March 9, 2024, at the Madam Walker Theatre, 617 Indiana Ave.

The free community concert will star 2014 Gold Medalist Jinjoo Cho, who founded the Encore Chamber Music Institute in Ohio. Encore scholarship recipients Bethlehem Kelley and Javier F. Torres Delgado will join her along with longtime collaborator and pianist Hyunsoo Kim.

Liviu Prunaru and pianist Chih-Yi Chen

April 2, 2024, at the Indiana History Center

Liviu Prunaru, concertmaster of the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam and 1998 Silver Medalist, will perform with official competition pianist Chih-Yi Chen in a concert that will be live streamed and available on demand. J.S. Bach's Arioso from Cantata BWV 156; Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 10 in G major, Op. 96; and Saint-Saëns' Havanaise, Op. 83 are among the pieces on the program.

May 29, 2024, at The Cabaret, 924 N. Pennsylvania St.

Violinist and vocalist Charles Yang, pianist Peter Dugan and clarinetist Mark Dover will bring virtuosity and a blend of classical works, jazz, pop and improvisation.
