Sky removes jokes about the Queen from 'Last Week Tonight With John Oliver’

Sky has cut jokes about the death of the Queen from the UK broadcast of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

During the episode, comedian Oliver made jokes about how corporations such as Domino's Pizza were writing social media tributes about the late monarch.

He said: “Obviously, we have to start with the UK, which is clearly still reeling from the shocking death of a 96-year-old woman from natural causes. It is a big moment this week and for some reason absolutely everyone felt they had to wade in on [it].”

Oliver also made reference to the Queen during a joke about new Prime Minister Liz Truss. He said: “The nicest thing the Queen of England ever did for anyone was die the week that woman became Prime Minister. Because for at least a week, she’s not going to be getting justifiably destroyed for answers like that.”

Though neither joke was specifically about the Queen, Sky have made the decision to cut both jokes from the UK broadcast of the show.

A slightly shortened version of the show without the two mentioned sections is still available to watch via NOW and Sky Go.

The move to censor the show has been criticised on social media with one viewer tweeting: "Very disappointed in @SkyUK censorship of @LastWeekTonight with @iamjohnoliver - we condemn other countries for this sort of behaviour. The audience is used to his irreverent style and light hearted comments. The “target” of his remarks was corporate social media!"

Another fan also said: "We’re not children, @SkyUK, please do not censor Last Week Tonight With John Oliver again just because he says a few edgy things about the royal family."

Oliver has previously been censored in the UK for using footage from parliament for the purposes of a joke which is actually illegal.
