EXCLUSIVE: Sky has acquired UK rights to true-crime documentary series Inheritance: The Jersey Murders, which has been six years in the making.

The under-the-radar three-part series is set amidst the 1987 Great Storm on the island of Jersey, where Elizabeth and Nicholas Newall vanish. Suspicion falls on their sons, Roderick and Mark, when blood is found, leading to a murder investigation. Roderick evades the police but is eventually apprehended off the coast of Africa, while Mark is arrested in Europe. Legal complexities result in a secret deal: Roderick serves 12 years for double murder, while Mark serves 22 months and inherits the entire Newall fortune.  More than three decades later, this three-part documentary uses 70 hours of unheard taped recordings between the brothers to reveal new insight and uncovers how Mark Newall went on to co-found a major e-commerce company.

The limited series was directed and produced by Eloise Singer at Singer Studios and executive-produced by XYZ Films and Chris Smith’s Library Films. Sky plans to premiere the project in April, 2024.

Propagate Content has acquired international distribution rights and is launching the series at this week’s London TV Screenings.

The sale marks the second recent collaboration for XYZ and Library, coming on the heels of the companies’ deal with Netflix for Sundance premiere Skywalkers: A Love Story.

Library’s Chris Smith serves as executive producer alongside XYZ’s Head of Documentary, Tamir Ardon, and CEO Nick Spicer. The deal was struck between XYZ Films and Alex Wright on behalf of Sky.

“This documentary has been six years in the making and my hope is that it will serve as a poignant reminder that the pursuit of truth and justice should never waver”, said director and producer, Eloise Singer.

“My intention is for the story to spark meaningful conversations about the importance of accountability and serve as a catalyst for change. I’m excited to be working with Sky to bring the series to UK audiences,” she added.

Library Films’ credits include hit documentaries Jim & Andy, Fyre, 100 Foot Wave and Tiger King. XYZ’s slate includes Eiza González and Aaron Paul pic Ash and Atom Egoyan’s Seven Veils. Singer Studios recently won the Tribeca Storyscapes Award for The Pirate Queen: A Forgotten Legend starring Lucy Liu.
