Skin Cancer Awareness Month: The Importance of Sun Safety

One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, and 90% of those cancers are melanoma, the deadliest type. But the good news is it is treatable if detected early. In fact, the five-year survival rate is 99%. On a mission to spread that message, longtime leaders in sun protection, skincare brand La Roche-Posay in partnership with TDS, the dermatologist specialists of New York City were offering free head to toe skin cancer screenings to the public. The brand says they've helped facilitate more than half a million skin exams by board certified dermatologists over the last ten years. Events like these, they say, help provide access to someone who may not visit a dermatologist regularly or have access to one. The team says more than 90% of skin cancers are caused by sun exposure and the sun's harmful rays can penetrate even through glass, so that means no matter where you are or what you're doing, if you're exposed to sunlight you need to protect your skin and remember - every day is a sunscreen day.
