Captain Fantastic lost to the Carpenters in 1970. Both artists were nominated for Album of the Year, but the Carpenters were also nominated for Record of the Year for their No. 1 smash, “(They Long to Be) Close to You.” Karen and Richard also won for Best Contemporary Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group, or Chorus. Elton didn’t win his first Grammy until 1986. He has won five in all. He has also amassed three noms for Album of the Year, two for Song of the Year, and two for Record of the Year. He received a Grammy Legend Award in 2000. (Photo: KMazur/WireImage)
