The sister-in-law of Danny Serafini, the ex-MLB player arrested in connection with the 2021 murder and attempted murder of his father-in-law and mother-in-law, spoke out about the loss of her parents.

In a statement to NBC Bay Area, Adrienne Spohr called the shooting a “heinous, calculated crime.”

Serafini, 49, was arrested in Nevada Friday in connection with the June 2021 murder of 70-year-old Robert Gary Spohr and the attempted murder of 68-year-old Wendy Wood, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office in California said on Facebook.

Also arrested was Samantha Scott, 33, who was apprehended in Las Vegas.

Spohr and Wood were shot in their North Lake Tahoe home. Spohr died from a gunshot wound, while his wife recovered from her injuries, but died a year later.

Upon reviewing home surveillance video footage, police saw "a hooded male wearing a face-covering and a backpack walking to the residence several hours before the homicide occurred."

"Since then, PCSO detectives have worked tirelessly over the course of the past two years, devoting countless hours of follow up by detectives, along with the DA’s Office," the sheriff's office wrote on Facebook.

"The information and evidence detectives gathered led them to identify Serafini and Scott as the suspects; both suspects are known to each other and to the victims."

In her statement, Adrienne Spohr memorialized her father, whom she called the “emotional backbone of our family.”

“He loved the water and spent many summer days cruising the shores of Lake Tahoe with friends and family on his boat,” Adrienne wrote.

She declined to say anything about her sister’s potential involvement.

Serafini and Scott are awaiting extradition from Nevada to California. It is not immediately clear if either has retained an attorney.

Sgt. David Smith of the sheriff's office said that Serafini is the son-in-law of both victims, NBC News reported.

Serafini pitched in Major League Baseball for parts of seven seasons from 1996 to 2007. After being drafted in the first round by the Minnesota Twins, he also played for the Chicago Cubs, San Padres, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds and Colorado Rockies.
