I grew up repeatedly watching Whoopi Goldberg lead her struggling convent choir in Sister Act, and Lauryn Hill's stunning rendition of "Joyful, Joyful" still lives rent-free in my mind. So, in 2020, when Disney finally confirmed that Sister Mary Clarence would make a comeback in Sister Act 3, you could imagine my excitement.

The official account tweeted, "Sister Act 3 is in development! @WhoopiGoldberg returns to star and produce, with @TylerPerry as producer as well. Sister Act 3 will premiere on @DisneyPlus."

More than two years later, Disney has yet to announce a release date, but Goldberg and Perry have offered several updates and hints about what to expect. Keep reading for more details about the sequel, from casting to the plot.

1. Whoopi Goldberg Has Opened Up About Trying to Make Sister Act 3 Happen

Goldberg has been pretty open about her longtime efforts to make this sequel a reality. She told Entertainment Tonight, "I've been trying to do this for six years. I was told no one was interested in this. It takes a minute for people to realize they should take their foot out of their mouth."

"It's coming. We gotta shoot it, but it's happening," she added. "You're never fully happy with a script because one of the things you find is you wanna have the space to make an adjustment if you need to. Sometimes what looks right on paper doesn't come out of your mouth the right way. You have to move it around a little bit, but I'm very hopeful people will be happy."

2. The Plot for Sister Act 3 Has Yet to Be Revealed, But There Is a Script

Plot details are still unknown, but on a brighter note, there's been some progress with the screenplay.

During his 2022 appearance on The View, Perry said, “I love the idea of us making this happen, but you know, the Hollywood system moves a little slower than I’d like to. So we’ve got a good script. We’re off to a great start. We’re just trying to get everybody moving in the right direction so we can get it going.”

Additionally, Goldberg revealed on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon that she's seen the script. While she “really liked it,” she noted that it still needs to “go through many adults.”

We may not know much yet, but I get the feeling there will be a lot of singing and epic new song covers.

3. Goldberg Teased That It's a "Fun Movie"

Touchstone Pictures

During her virtual appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden in 2020, she said, “For a long time, they kept saying no one wanted to see it. And then quite recently, it turns out, that that may not be true. People may want to see it. So we're working diligently to try to figure out how to get the gang together and come back."

She added, "It's a really fun movie. It's fun and it's feel-good, you know, nobody's mad. It's just like, listen, bad singing, great singing, okay singing and then nuns. What's better than that?"

4. Tyler Perry Said the "Country Needs" Sister Act 3

It sounds like the third installment will share the same, feel-good tone of the first two films. Perry told The Hollywood Reporter in October 2021, “Whoopi’s really excited. I think that this is just what the country needs. We need that feel-good moment in the movies where you go, ‘Oh, my God, I left there singing.’ That’s my hope.”

5. The Full Sister Act 3 Cast Hasn't Been Confirmed, But Goldberg Has Some Ideas

So far, Disney has confirmed that Goldberg will return as the leading lady. And while chatting with Variety in 2021, Goldberg teased that a few familiar faces from the first two films might return. She said, “Marc Shaiman [the franchise’s composer] is just waiting. The nuns are all waiting. Maybe there’s gonna be some of the kids [from Sister Act 2]. Who can say?”

Also, Goldberg appeared on Charlamagne Tha God’s show, Hell of a Week, and discussed her personal picks for the ensemble cast. She said, “Ask Keke Palmer to come in. You know, I want everybody to come in. I want Lizzo to come in, I want everybody. I want the girl with the chest, what's her name? Nicki [Minaj], I want Nicki to come!”

She continued, “I want everybody, I want as many people who wanna have some fun 'cause I really, desperately need to have some fun.”

6. Keke Palmer Revealed She Wants to Join the Cast

Fans of Insecure might recall how the actress sent Issa Rae a tweet that ultimately led to her cameo in season five. Once again, the star is shooting her shot with Goldberg's upcoming sequel.

During her appearance on The Talk in 2021, Palmer said, “Whoopi, I gotta shoot my shot, like I did with Issa [Rae] a little bit ago. I heard that Tyler Perry is doing Sister Act 3, and I just want you to know that I'm available for the job—any job. I mean, you ain't got to say nothing now, you know, I'll send you an email or something. Just let me know if you need me."

Goldberg's response? “I already brought it up. C'mon, Keke.” Fingers crossed that Palmer lands a starring role.

7. Kathy Najimy Said She's On Board

In January 2021, Najimy appeared on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show and revealed that she's down to join the new sequel—so it's very likely that she will also return. The Hocus Pocus star said, “[Whoopi is] trying to get that going. I like that. No hair, no makeup, no Spanx, comfortable shoes. It’s a win-win for me.”

8. Tim Federle Will Direct Sister Act 3

Deadline reported in September 2021 that Tim Federle will direct the upcoming film. It was also announced that Tom Leonardis would serve as producer and Madhuri Shekar would write the script.

Federle is best known for his work on the Disney+ series, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which he created and produced. Meanwhile, Shekar has penned the script for projects like Evil Eye, 3 Body Problem and The Nevers.

Keeping my fingers crossed for more Sister Act 3 updates!
